29. The training rule on receiving the right proportion of bean curry 29. Samasūpakapaṭiggahaṇasikkhāpada

Origin story

At one time the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery. Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. At that time the monks from the group of six were receiving almsfood with large amounts of bean curry. … Tena kho pana samayena chabbaggiyā bhikkhū piṇḍapātaṁ paṭiggaṇhantā sūpaññeva bahuṁ paṭiggaṇhanti …pe….

Final ruling

“‘I will receive almsfood with the right proportion of bean curry,’ this is how you should train.” “Samasūpakaṁ piṇḍapātaṁ paṭiggahessāmīti sikkhā karaṇīyā”ti.

Definitions

Bean curry: Sūpo nāma
there are two kinds of bean curry, to be taken with the hand: mung-bean curry and black-gram curry. dve sūpā— muggasūpo, māsasūpo hatthahāriyo.

Almsfood should be received with the right proportion of bean curry. Samasūpako piṇḍapāto paṭiggahetabbo. If a monk, out of disrespect, receives much bean curry, he commits an offense of wrong conduct. Yo anādariyaṁ paṭicca sūpaññeva bahuṁ paṭiggaṇhāti, āpatti dukkaṭassa.

Non-offenses

There is no offense: Anāpatti—if it is unintentional; asañcicca, if he is not mindful; assatiyā, if he does not know; ajānantassa, if he is sick; gilānassa, if it is any food apart from bean curry; rasarase, if it is from relatives; ñātakānaṁ, if it is from those who have given an invitation; pavāritānaṁ, if it is for the benefit of someone else; aññassatthāya, if it is by means of his own property; attano dhanena, if there is an emergency; āpadāsu, if he is insane; ummattakassa, if he is the first offender. ādikammikassāti.

The ninth training rule is finished. Navamasikkhāpadaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.
