33. The training rule on in order 33. Sapadānasikkhāpada
Origin story
At one time the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery. Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. At that time the monks from the group of six ate almsfood picking here and there. … Tena kho pana samayena chabbaggiyā bhikkhū tahaṁ tahaṁ omasitvā piṇḍapātaṁ bhuñjanti …pe….
Final ruling
“‘I will eat almsfood in order,’ this is how you should train.” “Sapadānaṁ piṇḍapātaṁ bhuñjissāmīti sikkhā karaṇīyā”ti.
Almsfood is to be eaten in order. Sapadānaṁ piṇḍapāto bhuñjitabbo. If a monk, out of disrespect, eats almsfood picking here and there, he commits an offense of wrong conduct. Yo anādariyaṁ paṭicca tahaṁ tahaṁ omasitvā piṇḍapātaṁ bhuñjati, āpatti dukkaṭassa.
Non-offenses
There is no offense: Anāpatti—if it is unintentional; asañcicca, if he is not mindful; assatiyā, if he does not know; ajānantassa, if he is sick; gilānassa, if he picks things out to give to others; aññesaṁ dento omasati, if he picks things out to put it into someone else’s vessel; aññassa bhājane ākiranto omasati, if it is a non-bean curry; uttaribhaṅge, if there is an emergency; āpadāsu, if he is insane; ummattakassa, if he is the first offender. ādikammikassāti.
The third training rule is finished. Tatiyasikkhāpadaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.
