34. The training rule on the right proportion of bean curry 34. Samasūpakasikkhāpada

Origin story

At one time the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery. Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Final ruling

“‘I will eat almsfood with the right proportion of bean curry,’ this is how you should train.” “Samasūpakaṁ piṇḍapātaṁ bhuñjissāmīti sikkhā karaṇīyā”ti.

Definitions

Bean curry: Sūpo nāma
there are two kinds of bean curry, to be taken with the hand: dve sūpā—mung-bean curry and black-gram curry. muggasūpo, māsasūpo hatthahāriyo.

Almsfood should be eaten with the right proportion of bean curry. Samasūpako piṇḍapāto bhuñjitabbo. If a monk, out of disrespect, eats much bean curry, he commits an offense of wrong conduct. Yo anādariyaṁ paṭicca sūpaññeva bahuṁ bhuñjati, āpatti dukkaṭassa.

Non-offenses

There is no offense: Anāpatti—if it is unintentional; asañcicca, if he is not mindful; assatiyā, if he does not know; ajānantassa, if he is sick; gilānassa, if it is any food apart from bean curry; rasarase, if it is from relatives; ñātakānaṁ, if it is from those who have given an invitation; pavāritānaṁ, if it is by means of his own property; attano dhanena, if there is an emergency; āpadāsu, if he is insane; ummattakassa, if he is the first offender. ādikammikassāti.
