60. The training rule on holding a weapon 60. Āvudhapāṇisikkhāpada

Origin story

At one time the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery. Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. At that time the monks from the group of six gave teachings to people holding weapons. … Tena kho pana samayena chabbaggiyā bhikkhū āvudhapāṇissa dhammaṁ desenti …pe….

Final ruling

“‘I will not give a teaching to anyone holding a weapon who is not sick,’ this is how you should train.” “Na āvudhapāṇissa agilānassa dhammaṁ desessāmīti sikkhā karaṇīyā”ti.

Definitions

A weapon: Āvudhaṁ nāma
any kind of bow. cāpo kodaṇḍo.

One should not give a teaching to anyone holding a weapon who is not sick. Na āvudhapāṇissa agilānassa dhammo desetabbo. If a monk, out of disrespect, gives a teaching to someone holding a weapon who is not sick, he commits an offense of wrong conduct. Yo anādariyaṁ paṭicca āvudhapāṇissa agilānassa dhammaṁ deseti, āpatti dukkaṭassa.

Non-offenses

There is no offense: Anāpatti—if it is unintentional; asañcicca …pe… if he is not mindful; if he does not know; if he is sick; if there is an emergency; if he is insane; if he is the first offender. ādikammikassāti.

The tenth training rule is finished. Dasamasikkhāpadaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.
