Origin story
At one time the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery. Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Final ruling
“‘I will not give a teaching to anyone with a covered head who is not sick,’ this is how you should train.” “Na oguṇṭhitasīsassa agilānassa dhammaṁ desessāmīti sikkhā karaṇīyā”ti.
Definitions
- With a covered head: Oguṇṭhitasīso nāma
- the upper robe covering the head is what is meant. sasīsaṁ pāruto vuccati.
One should not give a teaching to anyone with a covered head who is not sick. Na oguṇṭhitasīsassa agilānassa dhammo desetabbo. If a monk, out of disrespect, gives a teaching to someone with a covered head who is not sick, he commits an offense of wrong conduct. Yo anādariyaṁ paṭicca oguṇṭhitasīsassa agilānassa dhammaṁ deseti, āpatti dukkaṭassa.
Non-offenses
There is no offense: Anāpatti—if it is unintentional; asañcicca, if he is not mindful; assatiyā, if he does not know; ajānantassa, if he is sick; gilānassa, if he teaches the person after having them uncover their head; sīsaṁ vivarāpetvā deseti, if there is an emergency; āpadāsu, if he is insane; ummattakassa, if he is the first offender. ādikammikassāti.
