Origin story
At one time when the Buddha was staying at RÄjagaha in the Bamboo Grove, Tena samayena buddho bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivÄpe. the monks Mettiya and BhÅ«majaka were descending from the Vulture Peak when they saw two goats copulating. Tena kho pana samayena mettiyabhÅ«majakÄ bhikkhÅ« gijjhakÅ«į¹Ä pabbatÄ orohantÄ addasaį¹su chagalakaį¹ ajikÄya vippaį¹ipajjantaį¹. They said to each other, DisvÄna evamÄhaį¹suāāLetās give the he-goat the name Dabba the Mallian āhanda mayaį¹, Ävuso, imaį¹ chagalakaį¹ dabbaį¹ mallaputtaį¹ nÄma karoma. and the she-goat the name MettiyÄ the nun. The monks replied, BhikkhÅ« evamÄhaį¹suāāDonāt say such things. āmÄvuso, evaį¹ avacuttha. Venerable Dabba wouldnāt do that.ā NÄyasmÄ dabbo mallaputto evaį¹ karissatÄ«āti.
The monks told the Buddha. Atha kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato etamatthaį¹ Ärocesuį¹. Soon afterwards the Buddha had the Sangha gathered and questioned Dabba: Atha kho bhagavÄ etasmiį¹ nidÄne etasmiį¹ pakaraį¹e bhikkhusaį¹ ghaį¹ sannipÄtÄpetvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ dabbaį¹ mallaputtaį¹ paį¹ipucchiāāDabba, do you remember doing as these monks say?ā āsarasi tvaį¹, dabba, evarÅ«paį¹ kattÄ yathayime bhikkhÅ« Ähaį¹sÅ«āti?
āSir, you know what Iām like.ā āYathÄ maį¹, bhante, bhagavÄ jÄnÄtÄ«āti.
A second Dutiyampi kho bhagavÄ ā¦pe⦠and a third time the Buddha asked tatiyampi kho bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ dabbaį¹ mallaputtaį¹ etadavocaāthe same question āsarasi tvaį¹, dabba, evarÅ«paį¹ kattÄ yathayime bhikkhÅ« Ähaį¹sÅ«āti? and got the same response. āYathÄ maį¹, bhante, bhagavÄ jÄnÄtÄ«āti. He then said, āDabba, the Dabbas donāt give such evasive answers. āNa kho, dabba, dabbÄ evaį¹ nibbeį¹henti. āSince I was born, sir, I donāt recall having sexual intercourse even in a dream, let alone when awake.ā āYato ahaį¹, bhante, jÄto nÄbhijÄnÄmi supinantenapi methunadhammaį¹ paį¹isevitÄ, pageva jÄgaroāti.
āWell then, monks, call those monks to account.ā Atha kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesiāātena hi, bhikkhave, ime bhikkhÅ« anuyuƱjathÄāti. And the Buddha got up from his seat and entered his dwelling. Idaį¹ vatvÄ bhagavÄ uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ vihÄraį¹ pÄvisi.
The monks then questioned Mettiya and BhÅ«majaka, who told them what had happened. Atha kho te bhikkhÅ« mettiyabhÅ«majake bhikkhÅ« anuyuƱjiį¹su. The monks of few desires complained and criticized them, Ye te bhikkhÅ« appicchÄ ā¦pe⦠te ujjhÄyanti khiyyanti vipÄcentiāāHow could Mettiya and BhÅ«majaka charge Venerable Dabba with an offense entailing expulsion, using an unrelated legal issue as a pretext?ā ākathaƱhi nÄma mettiyabhÅ«majakÄ bhikkhÅ« Äyasmantaį¹ dabbaį¹ mallaputtaį¹ aƱƱabhÄgiyassa adhikaraį¹assa kiƱci desaį¹ lesamattaį¹ upÄdÄya pÄrÄjikena dhammena anuddhaį¹sessantÄ«āti.
They rebuked those monks in many ways and then told the Buddha.
