Unprincipled Conduct AdhammacariyÄsutta
Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him. Atha kho aƱƱataro brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha: SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āWhat is the cause, worthy Gotama, what is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell?ā āko nu kho, bho gotama, hetu ko paccayo yena māidhekacce sattÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjantÄ«āti?
āUnprincipled and immoral conduct is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.ā āAdhammacariyÄvisamacariyÄhetu kho, brÄhmaį¹a, evamāidhekacce sattÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjantÄ«āti.
āBut what is the cause, worthy Gotama, what is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm?ā āKo pana, bho gotama, hetu ko paccayo yena māidhekacce sattÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjantÄ«āti?

āI donāt understand the detailed meaning of what the worthy Gotama has said in brief. āNa kho ahaį¹ imassa bhoto gotamassa saį¹ khittena bhÄsitassa vitthÄrena atthaį¹ ÄjÄnÄmi. Please, worthy Gotama, teach me this matter so I can understand the detailed meaning.ā SÄdhu me bhavaį¹ gotamo tathÄ dhammaį¹ desetu yathÄhaį¹ imassa bhoto gotamassa saį¹ khittena bhÄsitassa vitthÄrena atthaį¹ ÄjÄneyyanāti.
āWell then, brahmin, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā āTena hi, brÄhmaį¹a, suį¹Ähi, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti.
āYes, worthy sir,ā the brahmin replied. āEvaį¹, bhoāti kho so brÄhmaį¹o bhagavato paccassosi. The Buddha said this: BhagavÄ etadavoca:
āBrahmin, unprincipled and immoral conduct is threefold by way of body, āTividhÄ kho, brÄhmaį¹a, kÄyena adhammacariyÄvisamacariyÄ hoti; fourfold by way of speech, catubbidhÄ vÄcÄya adhammacariyÄvisamacariyÄ hoti; and threefold by way of mind. tividhÄ manasÄ adhammacariyÄvisamacariyÄ hoti.
