This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, there are these three fires. “Tayome, bhikkhave, aggī. What three? Katame tayo? The fires of greed, hate, and delusion. Rāgaggi, dosaggi, mohaggi—These are the three fires.” ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo aggī”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“The fire of greed burns a mortal, “Rāgaggi dahati macce, lustful, infatuated by sensual pleasures; ratte kāmesu mucchite; while, fallen in the fire of hate, Dosaggi pana byāpanne, a person kills living creatures; nare pāṇātipātino.

and, bewildered by the fire of delusion, Mohaggi pana sammūḷhe, they miss the teaching of the noble ones. ariyadhamme akovide; Not recognizing these three fires, Ete aggī ajānantā, people are caught up in substantial reality. sakkāyābhiratā pajā.

They fill the ranks of hell, Te vaḍḍhayanti nirayaṁ, of birth as an animal, tiracchānañca yoniyo; or of titans and ghosts, Asuraṁ pettivisayaṁ, not freed from Māra’s bonds. amuttā mārabandhanā.

But as to those committed day and night Ye ca rattindivā yuttā, to the teaching of the Buddha: sammāsambuddhasāsane; they extinguish the fire of greed, Te nibbāpenti rāgaggiṁ, always perceiving ugliness; niccaṁ asubhasaññino.

while those supreme men Dosaggiṁ pana mettāya, extinguish the fire of hate with love; nibbāpenti naruttamā; and the fire of delusion with the wisdom Mohaggiṁ pana paññāya, that leads to penetration. yāyaṁ nibbedhagāminī.

Having extinguished these fires, alert, Te nibbāpetvā nipakā, tireless all day and night, rattindivamatanditā; they become fully extinguished, Asesaṁ parinibbanti, completely transcending suffering. asesaṁ dukkhamaccaguṁ.

Seers of the noble truths, knowledge masters, Ariyaddasā vedaguno, the astute, understanding rightly, sammadaññāya paṇḍitā; directly know the ending of rebirth, Jātikkhayamabhiññāya, they come not back to future lives.” nāgacchanti punabbhavan”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
