Harmless Ahiṁsakasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Harmless went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Atha kho ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.

When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said, Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “I am Harmless, worthy Gotama, I am Harmless!” “ahiṁsakāhaṁ, bho gotama, ahiṁsakāhaṁ, bho gotamā”ti.

“If you were really like your name, “Yathā nāmaṁ tathā cassa, then you’d be Harmless. siyā kho tvaṁ ahiṁsako; But a truly harmless person Yo ca kāyena vācāya, does no harm by way of manasā ca na hiṁsati; body, speech, or mind; Sa ve ahiṁsako hoti, they don’t harm anyone else.” yo paraṁ na vihiṁsatī”ti.

When he had spoken, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Harmless said to the Buddha, Evaṁ vutte, ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “Excellent, worthy Gotama! …” … “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… abbhaññāsi. And Venerable Bhāradvāja the Harmless became one of the perfected. Aññataro ca panāyasmā ahiṁsakabhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.

Harmless

“If you were really like your name, then you’d be Harmless. But a truly harmless person does no harm by way of body, speech, or mind; they don’t harm anyone else.”

When he had spoken, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Harmless said to the Buddha, “Excellent, worthy Gotama! …” … And Venerable Bhāradvāja the Harmless became one of the perfected.
