Harmless Ahiṁsakasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Harmless went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Atha kho ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.

When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said, SammodanÄ«yaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œI am Harmless, worthy Gotama, I am Harmless!ā€ ā€œahiṁsakāhaṁ, bho gotama, ahiṁsakāhaṁ, bho gotamÄā€ti.

ā€œIf you were really like your name, ā€œYathā nāmaṁ tathā cassa, then you’d be Harmless. siyā kho tvaṁ ahiṁsako; But a truly harmless person Yo ca kāyena vācāya, does no harm by way of manasā ca na hiṁsati; body, speech, or mind; Sa ve ahiṁsako hoti, they don’t harm anyone else.ā€ yo paraṁ na vihiṁsatÄ«ā€ti.

When he had spoken, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Harmless said to the Buddha, Evaṁ vutte, ahiṁsakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! ā€¦ā€ … ā€œabhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… abbhaƱƱāsi. And Venerable Bhāradvāja the Harmless became one of the perfected. AƱƱataro ca panāyasmā ahiṁsakabhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosÄ«ti.
