The Questions of Ajita Ajitamāṇavapucchā

“By what is the world shrouded?” “Kenassu nivuto loko, said Venerable Ajita. (iccāyasmā ajito) “Why does it not shine? Kenassu nappakāsati; Tell me, what is its tar pit? Kissābhilepanaṁ brūsi, What is its greatest fear?” Kiṁsu tassa mahabbhayaṁ”.
“The world is shrouded in ignorance.” “Avijjāya nivuto loko, replied the Buddha. (ajitāti bhagavā) “Avarice and negligence make it not shine. Vevicchā pamādā nappakāsati; Muttered prayer is its tar pit. Jappābhilepanaṁ brūmi, Suffering is its greatest fear.” Dukkhamassa mahabbhayaṁ”.
“The streams flow everywhere,” “Savanti sabbadhi sotā, said Venerable Ajita. (iccāyasmā ajito) “What is there to block them? Sotānaṁ kiṁ nivāraṇaṁ; And tell me the restraint of streams—Sotānaṁ saṁvaraṁ brūhi, by what are they locked out?” Kena sotā pidhiyyare”.
“The streams in the world,” “Yāni sotāni lokasmiṁ, replied the Buddha, (ajitāti bhagavā) “are blocked by mindfulness. Sati tesaṁ nivāraṇaṁ; I tell you the restraint of streams—Sotānaṁ saṁvaraṁ brūmi, they are locked out by wisdom.” Paññāyete pidhiyyare”.
“That wisdom and mindfulness,” “Paññā ceva sati yañca, said Venerable Ajita, (iccāyasmā ajito) “and that which is name and form, good fellow; Nāmarūpañca mārisa; when questioned, please tell me of this: Etaṁ me puṭṭho pabrūhi, where does this all cease?” Katthetaṁ uparujjhati”.
“This question which you have asked, “Yametaṁ pañhaṁ apucchi, I shall answer you, Ajita. ajita taṁ vadāmi te; Where name and form Yattha nāmañca rūpañca, cease with nothing left over—asesaṁ uparujjhati; with the cessation of consciousness, Viññāṇassa nirodhena, here they cease.” etthetaṁ uparujjhati”.
“There are those who have appraised the teaching, “Ye ca saṅkhātadhammāse, and many kinds of trainees here. ye ca sekhā puthū idha; Now you, being alert, are asked Tesaṁ me nipako iriyaṁ, to tell me their behavior, good fellow.’ puṭṭho pabrūhi mārisa”.
“Not greedy for sensual pleasures, “Kāmesu nābhigijjheyya, their mind would be unclouded. Manasānāvilo siyā; Skilled in all things, Kusalo sabbadhammānaṁ, a mendicant would wander mindful.” Sato bhikkhu paribbaje”ti.

The Questions of Ajita

“By what is the world shrouded?” said Venerable Ajita. “Why does it not shine? Tell me, what is its tar pit? What is its greatest fear?”
“The world is shrouded in ignorance.” replied the Buddha. “Avarice and negligence make it not shine. Muttered prayer is its tar pit. Suffering is its greatest fear.”
“The streams flow everywhere,” said Venerable Ajita. “What is there to block them? And tell me the restraint of streams—by what are they locked out?”
“The streams in the world,” replied the Buddha, “are blocked by mindfulness. I tell you the restraint of streams—they are locked out by wisdom.”
“That wisdom and mindfulness,” said Venerable Ajita, “and that which is name and form, good fellow; when questioned, please tell me of this: where does this all cease?”
“This question which you have asked, I shall answer you, Ajita. Where name and form cease with nothing left over—with the cessation of consciousness, here they cease.”
“There are those who have appraised the teaching, and many kinds of trainees here. Now you, being alert, are asked to tell me their behavior, good fellow.’
“Not greedy for sensual pleasures, their mind would be unclouded. Skilled in all things, a mendicant would wander mindful.”

“Kenassu nivuto loko, (iccāyasmā ajito) Kenassu nappakāsati; Kissābhilepanaṁ brūsi, Kiṁsu tassa mahabbhayaṁ”.
“Avijjāya nivuto loko, (ajitāti bhagavā) Vevicchā pamādā nappakāsati; Jappābhilepanaṁ brūmi, Dukkhamassa mahabbhayaṁ”.
“Savanti sabbadhi sotā, (iccāyasmā ajito) Sotānaṁ kiṁ nivāraṇaṁ; Sotānaṁ saṁvaraṁ brūhi, Kena sotā pidhiyyare”.
