At the Peacocksā Feeding Ground MoranivÄpasutta
At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, at the monastery of the wanderers in the peacocksā feeding ground. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati moranivÄpe paribbÄjakÄrÄme. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āMendicants!ā ābhikkhavoāti.
āVenerable sir,ā they replied. āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. The Buddha said this: BhagavÄ etadavoca:
āMendicants, a mendicant who has three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans. āTÄ«hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacÄrÄ« accantapariyosÄno seį¹į¹ho devamanussÄnaį¹. What three? Katamehi tÄ«hi? The entire spectrum of an adeptās ethics, immersion, and wisdom. Asekhena sÄ«lakkhandhena, asekhena samÄdhikkhandhena, asekhena paƱƱÄkkhandhenaāA mendicant with these three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans. imehi, kho, bhikkhave, tÄ«hi dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacÄrÄ« accantapariyosÄno seį¹į¹ho devamanussÄnaį¹.
A mendicant who has another three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans. Aparehipi, bhikkhave, tÄ«hi dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacÄrÄ« accantapariyosÄno seį¹į¹ho devamanussÄnaį¹. What three? Katamehi tÄ«hi? A demonstration of psychic power, a demonstration of revealing, and a demonstration of instruction. IddhipÄį¹ihÄriyena, ÄdesanÄpÄį¹ihÄriyena, anusÄsanÄ«pÄį¹ihÄriyenaāA mendicant with these three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans. imehi kho, bhikkhave, tÄ«hi dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti, accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacÄrÄ« accantapariyosÄno seį¹į¹ho devamanussÄnaį¹.
Right view, right knowledge, and right freedom. SammÄdiį¹į¹hiyÄ, sammÄƱÄį¹ena, sammÄvimuttiyÄāA mendicant with these three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans. imehi kho, bhikkhave, tÄ«hi dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacÄrÄ« accantapariyosÄno seį¹į¹ho devamanussÄnaį¹.
A mendicant who has two qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans. DvÄ«hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacÄrÄ« accantapariyosÄno seį¹į¹ho devamanussÄnaį¹. What two? Katamehi dvÄ«hi? Knowledge and conduct. VijjÄya, caraį¹enaāA mendicant with these two qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are best among gods and humans. imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvÄ«hi dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu accantaniį¹į¹ho hoti accantayogakkhemÄ« accantabrahmacÄrÄ« accantapariyosÄno seį¹į¹ho devamanussÄnaį¹. The divinity Sanaį¹ kumÄra also spoke this verse: BrahmunÄ pesÄ, bhikkhave, sanaį¹ kumÄrena gÄthÄ bhÄsitÄ:
āThe aristocrat is best among people āKhattiyo seį¹į¹ho janetasmiį¹, who take clan as the standard. ye gottapaį¹isÄrino; But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct VijjÄcaraį¹asampanno, is first among gods and humans.ā so seį¹į¹ho devamÄnuseāti.
Now, that verse spoken by the divinity Sanaį¹ kumÄra is well spoken, not poorly spoken. Itās beneficial, not pointless, and I agree with it. SÄ kho panesÄ, bhikkhave, sanaį¹ kumÄrena gÄthÄ bhÄsitÄ subhÄsitÄ, no dubbhÄsitÄ; atthasaį¹hitÄ, no anatthasaį¹hitÄ; anumatÄ mayÄ. I also say: Ahampi, bhikkhave, evaį¹ vadÄmi:
āThe aristocrat is best among people āKhattiyo seį¹į¹ho janetasmiį¹, who take clan as the standard. ye gottapaį¹isÄrino; But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct VijjÄcaraį¹asampanno, is first among gods and humans.āā so seį¹į¹ho devamÄnuseāāti.
