Aṅgaṇikabhāradvāja Aṅgaṇikabhāradvājattheragāthā

Seeking purity the wrong way, “Ayoni suddhimanvesaṁ, I served the sacred fire in a grove. aggiṁ paricariṁ vane; Not knowing the path to purity, Suddhimaggaṁ ajānanto, I practiced endless mortification. akāsiṁ amaraṁ tapaṁ.

I’ve gained this happiness by means of happiness: Taṁ sukhena sukhaṁ laddhaṁ, behold the clear rightness of the teaching! passa dhammasudhammataṁ; I’ve attained the three knowledges Tisso vijjā anuppattā, and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions. kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.

I used to be brahmin only by kin, Brahmabandhu pure āsiṁ, but now I really am a brahmin! idāni khomhi brāhmaṇo; I am master of the three knowledges, <j>I’m a bathed initiate, Tevijjo nhātako camhi, I’m a scholar and a knowledge master. sottiyo camhi vedagū”ti.
