Inner Stains Antarāmalasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, there are these three inner stains, inner foes, inner enemies, inner killers, and inner adversaries. “Tayome, bhikkhave, antarāmalā antarāamittā antarāsapattā antarāvadhakā antarāpaccatthikā. What three? Katame tayo? Greed, Lobho, bhikkhave, antarāmalo antarāamitto antarāsapatto antarāvadhako antarāpaccatthiko. hate, Doso, bhikkhave, antarāmalo antarāamitto antarāsapatto antarāvadhako antarāpaccatthiko. and delusion. Moho, bhikkhave, antarāmalo antarāamitto antarāsapatto antarāvadhako antarāpaccatthiko. These three are inner stains, inner foes, inner enemies, inner killers, and inner adversaries.” Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo antarāmalā antarāamittā antarāsapattā antarāvadhakā antarāpaccatthikā”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Greed creates harm; “Anatthajanano lobho, greed upsets the mind. lobho cittappakopano; That person doesn’t recognize Bhayamantarato jātaṁ, the danger that arises within. taṁ jano nāvabujjhati.

A greedy person doesn’t know the good. Luddho atthaṁ na jānāti, A greedy person doesn’t see the truth. luddho dhammaṁ na passati; When a person is beset by greed, Andhatamaṁ tadā hoti, only blind darkness is left. yaṁ lobho sahate naraṁ.

Those who have given up greed, Yo ca lobhaṁ pahantvāna, don’t get greedy even when provoked. lobhaneyye na lubbhati; Greed falls off them Lobho pahīyate tamhā, like a drop from a lotus-leaf. udabindūva pokkharā.

Hate creates harm; Anatthajanano doso, hate upsets the mind. doso cittappakopano; That person doesn’t recognize Bhayamantarato jātaṁ, the danger that arises within. taṁ jano nāvabujjhati.

A hateful person doesn’t know the good. Duṭṭho atthaṁ na jānāti, A hateful person doesn’t see the truth. duṭṭho dhammaṁ na passati; When a person is beset by hate, Andhatamaṁ tadā hoti, only blind darkness is left. yaṁ doso sahate naraṁ.

Those who have given up hate, Yo ca dosaṁ pahantvāna, don’t get angry even when provoked. dosaneyye na dussati; Hate falls off them Doso pahīyate tamhā, like a palm-leaf from its stem. tālapakkaṁva bandhanā.

Delusion creates harm; Anatthajanano moho, delusion upsets the mind. moho cittappakopano; That person doesn’t recognize Bhayamantarato jātaṁ, the danger that arises within. taṁ jano nāvabujjhati.

A deluded person doesn’t know the good. Mūḷho atthaṁ na jānāti, A deluded person doesn’t see the truth. mūḷho dhammaṁ na passati; When a person is beset by delusion, Andhatamaṁ tadā hoti, only blind darkness is left. yaṁ moho sahate naraṁ.

Those who have given up delusion, Yo ca mohaṁ pahantvāna, don’t get deluded even when provoked. mohaneyye na muyhati; They banish all delusion, Mohaṁ vihanti so sabbaṁ, as the rising sun the dark.” ādiccovudayaṁ taman”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Navamaṁ.
