Progressive Cessation Anupubbanirodhasutta
āReverend, they speak of āprogressive cessationā. āāAnupubbanirodho, anupubbanirodhoāti, Ävuso, vuccati. What is the progressive cessation that the Buddha spoke of?ā KittÄvatÄ nu kho, Ävuso, anupubbanirodho vutto bhagavatÄāti?
āFirst, take a mendicant who, quite secluded from sensual pleasures ⦠enters and remains in the first absorption. āIdhÄvuso, bhikkhu vivicceva kÄmehi ā¦pe⦠paį¹hamaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. To this extent the Buddha spoke of progressive cessation in a qualified sense. ⦠EttÄvatÄpi kho, Ävuso, anupubbanirodho vutto bhagavatÄ pariyÄyena ā¦peā¦.
Furthermore, take a mendicant who, going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, enters and remains in the cessation of perception and feeling. And, having seen with wisdom, their defilements come to an end. Puna caparaį¹, Ävuso, bhikkhu sabbaso nevasaƱƱÄnÄsaƱƱÄyatanaį¹ samatikkamma saƱƱÄvedayitanirodhaį¹ upasampajja viharati, paƱƱÄya cassa disvÄ ÄsavÄ parikkhÄ«į¹Ä honti. To this extent the Buddha spoke of progressive cessation in a definitive sense.ā EttÄvatÄpi kho, Ävuso, anupubbanirodho vutto bhagavatÄ nippariyÄyenÄāti.
