Another Gotama (Apara) Gotamattheragāthā

You should understand your own purpose, “Vijāneyya sakaṁ atthaṁ, and consider the dispensation carefully, Avalokeyyātha pāvacanaṁ; as well as what’s appropriate Yañcettha assa patirūpaṁ, for one who has entered the ascetic life. Sāmaññaṁ ajjhupagatassa.

Good friendship in the community, Mittaṁ idha ca kalyāṇaṁ, undertaking plenty of training, Sikkhā vipulaṁ samādānaṁ; eagerness to learn from the teachers—Sussūsā ca garūnaṁ, this is appropriate for an ascetic. Etaṁ samaṇassa patirūpaṁ.

Respect for the Buddha, Buddhesu sagāravatā, reverence for the Dhamma as it really is, Dhamme apaciti yathābhūtaṁ; esteem for the Saṅgha—Saṅghe ca cittikāro, this is appropriate for an ascetic. Etaṁ samaṇassa patirūpaṁ.

Commitment to good conduct and alms-resort, Ācāragocare yutto, a livelihood that is pure and blameless, Ājīvo sodhito agārayho; and stilling the mind—Cittassa ca saṇṭhapanaṁ, this is appropriate for an ascetic. Etaṁ samaṇassa patirūpaṁ.

An impressive deportment <j>in things that should be done, Cārittaṁ atha vārittaṁ, and in those better avoided; Iriyāpathiyaṁ pasādaniyaṁ; commitment to the higher mind—Adhicitte ca āyogo, this is appropriate for an ascetic. Etaṁ samaṇassa patirūpaṁ.

Wilderness lodgings, Āraññakāni senāsanāni, remote and quiet, Pantāni appasaddāni; fit for use by a sage—Bhajitabbāni muninā, this is appropriate for an ascetic. Etaṁ samaṇassa patirūpaṁ.

Ethics, learning, Sīlañca bāhusaccañca, investigation of teachings in line with the truth, Dhammānaṁ pavicayo yathābhūtaṁ; and penetration of the truths—Saccānaṁ abhisamayo, this is appropriate for an ascetic. Etaṁ samaṇassa patirūpaṁ.

Developing the perceptions Bhāveyya ca aniccanti, of impermanence, non-self, and unattractiveness, Anattasaññaṁ asubhasaññañca; and dissatisfaction with the whole world—Lokamhi ca anabhiratiṁ, this is appropriate for an ascetic. Etaṁ samaṇassa patirūpaṁ.

Developing the awakening factors, Bhāveyya ca bojjhaṅge, the bases for psychic power, the faculties and powers, Iddhipādāni indriyāni balāni; and the noble eightfold path—Aṭṭhaṅgamaggamariyaṁ, this is appropriate for an ascetic. Etaṁ samaṇassa patirūpaṁ.

A sage should abandon craving, Taṇhaṁ pajaheyya muni, defilements shattered, root and all, Samūlake āsave padāleyya; they should live liberated—Vihareyya vippamutto, this is appropriate for an ascetic. Etaṁ samaṇassa patirūpan”ti.

Kāḷudāyī ca so thero, ekavihārī ca kappino; Cūḷapanthako kappo ca, upaseno ca gotamo; Sattime dasake therā, gāthāyo cettha sattatīti.
