Observing Ugliness Asubhānupassīsutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, meditate observing the ugliness of the body. “Asubhānupassī, bhikkhave, kāyasmiṁ viharatha; Let mindfulness of breathing be well-established internally in your presence. ānāpānassati ca vo ajjhattaṁ parimukhaṁ sūpaṭṭhitā hotu; Meditate observing the impermanence of all conditions. sabbasaṅkhāresu aniccānupassino viharatha. As you meditate observing the ugliness of the body, you will give up desire for the body. Asubhānupassīnaṁ, bhikkhave, kāyasmiṁ viharataṁ yo subhāya dhātuyā rāgānusayo so pahīyati. When mindfulness of breathing is well-established internally in your presence, there will be no distressing external thoughts or wishes. Ānāpānassatiyā ajjhattaṁ parimukhaṁ sūpaṭṭhititāya ye bāhirā vitakkāsayā vighātapakkhikā, te na honti. When you meditate observing the impermanence of all conditions, ignorance is given up and knowledge arises.” Sabbasaṅkhāresu aniccānupassīnaṁ viharataṁ yā avijjā sā pahīyati, yā vijjā sā uppajjatī”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Observing the ugliness of the body, “Asubhānupassī kāyasmiṁ, mindful of the breath, ānāpāne paṭissato; one always keen sees Sabbasaṅkhārasamathaṁ, the stilling of all activities. passaṁ ātāpi sabbadā.

That mendicant sees rightly, Sa ve sammaddaso bhikkhu, and when freed in regards to that, yato tattha vimuccati; that peaceful sage, with perfect insight, Abhiññāvosito santo, has truly slipped their yoke.” sa ve yogātigo munī”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Chaṭṭhaṁ.
