For the Welfare of the People Bahujanahitasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āThese three individuals, mendicants, arise in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. āTayome puggalÄ loke uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjanti bahujanahitÄya bahujanasukhÄya lokÄnukampÄya atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹. What three? Katame tayo? Itās when a Realized One arises in the world, perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed. Idha, bhikkhave, tathÄgato loke uppajjati arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho vijjÄcaraį¹asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasÄrathi satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄ. He proclaims a teaching that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And he reveals a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure. So dhammaį¹ deseti ÄdikalyÄį¹aį¹ majjhekalyÄį¹aį¹ pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹aį¹ sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹, kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ pakÄseti. This is the first individual who arises in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹hamo puggalo loke uppajjamÄno uppajjati bahujanahitÄya bahujanasukhÄya lokÄnukampÄya atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹.
Furthermore, itās when a mendicant is a perfected one, with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their heartās goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenment. Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tasseva satthu sÄvako arahaį¹ hoti khÄ«į¹Äsavo vusitavÄ katakaraį¹Ä«yo ohitabhÄro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱÄvimutto. They teach Dhamma thatās good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And they reveal a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure. So dhammaį¹ deseti ÄdikalyÄį¹aį¹ majjhekalyÄį¹aį¹ pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹aį¹ sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹, kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ pakÄseti. This is the second individual who arises in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo puggalo loke uppajjamÄno uppajjati bahujanahitÄya bahujanasukhÄya lokÄnukampÄya atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹.
Furthermore, itās when a disciple of that Teacher is a trainee, a learned practitioner with precepts and observances intact. Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tasseva satthu sÄvako sekho hoti pÄį¹ipado bahussuto sÄ«lavatÅ«papanno. They teach Dhamma thatās good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And they reveal a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure. Sopi dhammaį¹ deseti ÄdikalyÄį¹aį¹ majjhekalyÄį¹aį¹ pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹aį¹ sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹, kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ pakÄseti. This is the third individual who arises in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, tatiyo puggalo loke uppajjamÄno uppajjati bahujanahitÄya bahujanasukhÄya lokÄnukampÄya atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹. These are the three individuals who arise in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.ā Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalÄ loke uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjanti bahujanahitÄya bahujanasukhÄya lokÄnukampÄya atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnanāti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āThe Teacher is the first, the great seer, āSatthÄ hi loke paį¹hamo mahesi, following whom is the evolved disciple, Tassanvayo sÄvako bhÄvitatto; and then a trainee, a practitioner, AthÄparo pÄį¹ipadopi sekho, learned, with precepts and observances intact. Bahussuto sÄ«lavatÅ«papanno.
These three are first among gods and humans, Ete tayo devamanussaseį¹į¹hÄ, beacons proclaiming the teaching! Pabhaį¹ karÄ dhammamudÄ«rayantÄ; They fling open the door to freedom from death, ApÄpuranti amatassa dvÄraį¹, freeing many from yokes. YogÄ pamocenti bahujjanaį¹ te.
Following the path so well taught Ye satthavÄhena anuttarena, by the unsurpassed caravan leader, Sudesitaį¹ maggamanukkamanti; those who are diligent in the Holy Oneās teaching Idheva dukkhassa karonti antaį¹, make an end of suffering in this very life.ā Ye appamattÄ sugatassa sÄsaneāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
