Bhaddā of the Curly Hair Bhaddākuṇḍalakesātherīgāthā
My hair mown off, covered in mud, “Lūnakesī paṅkadharī, I used to wander wearing just one robe. ekasāṭī pure cariṁ; I saw fault where there was none, Avajje vajjamatinī, and was blind to the actual fault. vajje cāvajjadassinī.
Leaving my day’s meditation Divāvihārā nikkhamma, on Vulture’s Peak Mountain, gijjhakūṭamhi pabbate; I saw the stainless Buddha Addasaṁ virajaṁ buddhaṁ, at the fore of the mendicant Saṅgha. bhikkhusaṅghapurakkhataṁ.
I bent my knee and bowed, Nihacca jāṇuṁ vanditvā, and in his presence raised my joined palms. sammukhā añjaliṁ akaṁ; “Come Bhaddā,” he said; ‘Ehi bhadde’ti maṁ avaca, that was my ordination. sā me āsūpasampadā.
“I’ve wandered among the Aṅgans and Magadhans, Ciṇṇā aṅgā ca magadhā, the Vajjis, Kāsis, and Kosalans. vajjī kāsī ca kosalā; I have eaten the almsfood of the nations Anaṇā paṇṇāsa vassāni, free of debt for fifty years.” raṭṭhapiṇḍaṁ abhuñjahaṁ.
“O! He has made so much merit! Puññaṁ vata pasavi bahuṁ, That lay follower is so very wise. Sappañño vatāyaṁ upāsako; He gave a robe to Bhaddā, Yo bhaddāya cīvaraṁ adāsi, who is released from all ties.” Vippamuttāya sabbaganthehī”ti.
