Bhadda Bhaddattheragāthā

I was an only child, “Ekaputto ahaṁ āsiṁ, loved by my mother and father. piyo mātu piyo pitu; They had me by practicing Bahūhi vatacariyāhi, many supplications and observances. laddho āyācanāhi ca.

Out of sympathy for me Te ca maṁ anukampāya, wishing me well and wanting the best for me, atthakāmā hitesino; my mother and father Ubho pitā ca mātā ca, took me to see the Buddha. buddhassa upanāmayuṁ.

“We had this son with difficulty; ‘Kicchā laddho ayaṁ putto, he is delicate and dainty. sukhumālo sukhedhito; We offer him to you, Lord, Imaṁ dadāma te nātha, to attend upon the victor.” jinassa paricārakaṁ’.

The teacher, having accepted me, Satthā ca maṁ paṭiggayha, declared to Ānanda: ānandaṁ etadabravi; “Quickly give him the going-forth—‘Pabbājehi imaṁ khippaṁ, this one will be a thoroughbred!” hessatyājāniyo ayaṁ’.

After he, the teacher, had sent me forth, Pabbājetvāna maṁ satthā, the victor entered his dwelling. vihāraṁ pāvisī jino; Before the sun set Anoggatasmiṁ sūriyasmiṁ, my mind was freed. tato cittaṁ vimucci me.

The teacher didn’t neglect me; Tato satthā nirākatvā, when he came out from seclusion, paṭisallānavuṭṭhito; he said: “Come Bhadda!” ‘Ehi bhaddā’ti maṁ āha, That was my ordination. sā me āsūpasampadā.

At seven years old Jātiyā sattavassena, I received ordination. laddhā me upasampadā; I’ve attained the three knowledges; Tisso vijjā anuppattā, oh, the clear rightness of the teaching! aho dhammasudhammatā”ti.
