Prince Candana’s Conduct Candakumāracariya

“Then again when I was “Punāparaṁ yadā homi, the true-born son of the One King ekarājassa atrajo; in the city of flowers, Pupphavatī, Nagare pupphavatiyā, I was called Prince Canda, the Moon. kumāro candasavhayo.

Then, released from being sacrificed, Tadāhaṁ yajanā mutto, I fled the sacrificial enclosure. nikkhanto yaññavāṭato; Giving rise to a sense of urgency, Saṁvegaṁ janayitvāna, I performed a great offering. mahādānaṁ pavattayiṁ.

I did not drink, I did not eat, Nāhaṁ pivāmi khādāmi, I did not enjoy any food napi bhuñjāmi bhojanaṁ; for five or six days Dakkhiṇeyye adatvāna, with having first offering to a worthy recipient. api chappañcarattiyo.

Suppose there was a merchant Yathāpi vāṇijo nāma, who had made a store of goods. Katvāna bhaṇḍasañcayaṁ; They would take those goods Yattha lābho mahā hoti, to where they could make a large profit. Tattha taṁ harati bhaṇḍakaṁ.

So too, even giving what one has used oneself Tatheva sakabhuttāpi, to others is very fruitful. pare dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ; That is why what is to be given to others Tasmā parassa dātabbaṁ, multiplies a hundredfold. satabhāgo bhavissati.

Knowing the reason for this, Etamatthavasaṁ ñatvā, I gave gifts in life after life. demi dānaṁ bhavābhave; I never relented in giving Na paṭikkamāmi dānato, for the attainment of awakening.” sambodhimanupattiyā”ti.

Candakumāracariyaṁ sattamaṁ.
