āMendicants, suppose a mendicant has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while walking. āCarato cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno uppajjati kÄmavitakko vÄ byÄpÄdavitakko vÄ vihiį¹sÄvitakko vÄ. They tolerate it and donāt give it up, get rid of it, eliminate it, and obliterate it. Such a mendicant is said to be ānot keen or prudent, always lazy, and lacking energyā when walking. TaƱce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhivÄseti nappajahati na vinodeti na byantÄ«karoti na anabhÄvaį¹ gameti. The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āWhether walking or standing, āCaraį¹ vÄ yadi vÄ tiį¹į¹haį¹, sitting or lying down, nisinno uda vÄ sayaį¹; one who thinks a bad thought Yo vitakkaį¹ vitakketi, to do with the domestic life pÄpakaį¹ gehanissitaį¹.
is practicing the wrong way, Kummaggaį¹ paį¹ipanno so, lost among things that delude; mohaneyyesu mucchito; such a mendicant is incapable Abhabbo tÄdiso bhikkhu, of experiencing the highest awakening. phuį¹į¹huį¹ sambodhimuttamaį¹.
But one who, whether standing or walking, Yo ca caraį¹ vÄ tiį¹į¹haį¹ vÄ, sitting or lying down, Nisinno uda vÄ sayaį¹; has calmed their thoughts, Vitakkaį¹ samayitvÄna, loving peace of mind; VitakkÅ«pasame rato; such a mendicant is capable Bhabbo so tÄdiso bhikkhu, of experiencing the highest awakening.ā Phuį¹į¹huį¹ sambodhimuttamanāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
