Slain Chetvāsutta

Near SāvatthÄ« in Jeta’s Grove. Sāvatthiyaṁ jetavane.

And then Sakka, lord of gods, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Atha kho sakko devānamindo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. and addressed him in verse: Ekamantaṁ į¹­hito kho sakko devānamindo bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

ā€œWhen what is slain do you sleep at ease? ā€œKiṁsu chetvā sukhaṁ seti, When what is slain is there no sorrow? kiṁsu chetvā na socati; What is the one thing Kissassu ekadhammassa, whose killing you approve?ā€ vadhaṁ rocesi gotamÄā€ti.

ā€œWhen anger’s slain you sleep at ease. ā€œKodhaṁ chetvā sukhaṁ seti, When anger’s slain there is no sorrow. kodhaṁ chetvā na socati; Anger has a poisonous root, Kodhassa visamÅ«lassa, and a honey tip, O Vāsava. madhuraggassa vāsava; The noble ones praise its killing, Vadhaṁ ariyā pasaṁsanti, for when it’s slain there is no sorrow.ā€ taƱhi chetvā na socatÄ«ā€ti.
