āI ask the sage abounding in wisdom,ā āPucchÄmi muniį¹ pahÅ«tapaƱƱaį¹, said Cunda the smith, (iti cundo kammÄraputto) āthe Buddha, master of the teaching, free of craving, Buddhaį¹ dhammassÄmiį¹ vÄ«tataį¹haį¹; best of men, excellent charioteer, please tell me this: Dvipaduttamaį¹ sÄrathÄ«naį¹ pavaraį¹, how many ascetics are there in the world?ā Kati loke samaį¹Ä tadiį¹ gha brÅ«hiā.
āThere are four ascetics, not a fifth.ā āCaturo samaį¹Ä na paƱcamatthi, said the Buddha to Cunda, (cundÄti bhagavÄ) āBeing asked to bear witness, <j>I will explain them to you: Te te Ävikaromi sakkhipuį¹į¹ho; the path-victor, the path-teacher, Maggajino maggadesako ca, the path-liver, and the path-wrecker.ā Magge jÄ«vati yo ca maggadÅ«sÄ«ā.
āWho is a path-victor according to the Buddhas?ā āKaį¹ maggajinaį¹ vadanti buddhÄ, said Cunda the smith, (iti cundo kammÄraputto) āand how is one an unequaled explainer of the path? MaggakkhÄyÄ« kathaį¹ atulyo hoti; Tell me when asked about one who lives the path, Magge jÄ«vati me brÅ«hi puį¹į¹ho, then declare the path-wrecker.ā Atha me Ävikarohi maggadÅ«siį¹ā.
āRid of indecision, free of thorns, āYo tiį¹į¹akathaį¹ katho visallo, delighting in extinguishment, not fawning, NibbÄnÄbhirato anÄnugiddho; a guide for the world with its gods. Lokassa sadevakassa netÄ, The Buddhas say one such is victor of the path. TÄdiį¹ maggajinaį¹ vadanti buddhÄ.

Dressed like one true to their vows, Chadanaį¹ katvÄna subbatÄnaį¹, pushy, rude, a corrupter of families, PakkhandÄ« kuladÅ«sako pagabbho; devious, unrestrained, chaff, MÄyÄvÄ« asaƱƱato palÄpo, the path-wreckerās life is a sham. PatirÅ«pena caraį¹ sa maggadÅ«sÄ«.
A layperson who gets this, Ete ca paį¹ivijjhi yo gahaį¹į¹ho, a learned, wise noble disciple, SutavÄ ariyasÄvako sapaƱƱo; knows that āThey are not all like that oneā. Sabbe netÄdisÄti ƱatvÄ, So when they see them they donāt lose their faith. Iti disvÄ na hÄpeti tassa saddhÄ; For how could one equate themāKathaį¹ hi duį¹į¹hena asampaduį¹į¹haį¹, the corrupt with the uncorrupt, <j>the pure with the impure?ā Suddhaį¹ asuddhena samaį¹ kareyyÄāti.
