Giving DÄnasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āThere are, mendicants, these two gifts. āDvemÄni, bhikkhave, dÄnÄniāA gift of things of the flesh and a gift of the teaching. ÄmisadÄnaƱca dhammadÄnaƱca. The better of these two gifts is the gift of the teaching. Etadaggaį¹, bhikkhave, imesaį¹ dvinnaį¹ dÄnÄnaį¹ yadidaį¹ dhammadÄnaį¹.
There are these two kinds of sharing. Dveme, bhikkhave, saį¹vibhÄgÄāSharing things of the flesh and sharing the teaching. Ämisasaį¹vibhÄgo ca dhammasaį¹vibhÄgo ca. The better of these two kinds of sharing is sharing the teaching. Etadaggaį¹, bhikkhave, imesaį¹ dvinnaį¹ saį¹vibhÄgÄnaį¹ yadidaį¹ dhammasaį¹vibhÄgo.
There are these two kinds of support. Dveme, bhikkhave, anuggahÄāSupport in things of the flesh and support in the teaching. ÄmisÄnuggaho ca dhammÄnuggaho ca. The better of these two kinds of support is support in the teaching.ā Etadaggaį¹, bhikkhave, imesaį¹ dvinnaį¹ anuggahÄnaį¹ yadidaį¹ dhammÄnuggahoāti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āIt is said to be the supreme, ultimate gift, āYamÄhu dÄnaį¹ paramaį¹ anuttaraį¹, and the sharing praised by the Buddha; Yaį¹ saį¹vibhÄgaį¹ bhagavÄ avaį¹į¹ayi; what wise and sensible person, <j>confident in the best of fields, Aggamhi khettamhi pasannacitto, would not sow a such timely gift? Viññū pajÄnaį¹ ko na yajetha kÄle.
For those who are diligent <j>in the dispensation of the Holy One, Ye ceva bhÄsanti suį¹anti cÅ«bhayaį¹, both those who speak and those who listen, PasannacittÄ sugatassa sÄsane; confident in the dispensation of the Holy One, Tesaį¹ so attho paramo visujjhati, such a gift purifies the highest goal.ā Ye appamattÄ sugatassa sÄsaneāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
Navamaį¹.
