Ten Kinds of Deeds Dasakammasutta

ā€œMendicants, I will teach you an untrue person and an even more untrue person, ā€œAsappurisaƱca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, asappurisena asappurisataraƱca; a true person and an even truer person. sappurisaƱca, sappurisena sappurisataraƱca. Taṁ suṇātha …pe….

And what is an untrue person? ā€œKatamo ca, bhikkhave, asappuriso? It’s someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And they’re covetous, malicious, with wrong view. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāṇātipātÄ« hoti, adinnādāyÄ« hoti, kāmesumicchācārÄ« hoti, musāvādÄ« hoti, pisuṇavāco hoti, pharusavāco hoti, samphappalāpÄ« hoti, abhijjhālu hoti, byāpannacitto hoti, micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti. This is called an untrue person. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, asappuriso.

And what is an even more untrue person? Katamo ca, bhikkhave, asappurisena asappurisataro? It’s someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. They’re covetous, malicious, with wrong view. And they encourage others to do these things. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca pāṇātipātÄ« hoti, paraƱca pāṇātipāte samādapeti …pe… attanā ca abhijjhālu hoti, paraƱca abhijjhāya samādapeti; attanā ca byāpannacitto hoti, paraƱca byāpāde samādapeti, attanā ca micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti, paraƱca micchādiį¹­į¹­hiyā samādapeti. This is called an even more untrue person. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, asappurisena asappurisataro.

And what is an even truer person? Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sappurisena sappurisataro? It’s someone who doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. They don’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. They’re contented, kind-hearted, with right view. And they encourage others to do these things. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca pāṇātipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti, paraƱca pāṇātipātā veramaṇiyā samādapeti …pe… attanā ca anabhijjhālu hoti, paraƱca anabhijjhāya samādapeti; attanā ca abyāpannacitto hoti, paraƱca abyāpāde samādapeti; attanā ca sammādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti, paraƱca sammādiį¹­į¹­hiyā samādapeti. This is called an even truer person.ā€ Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sappurisena sappurisataroā€ti.
