Teaching Desanāsutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

ā€œMendicants, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has two approaches to teaching Dhamma. ā€œTathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa dve dhammadesanā pariyāyena bhavanti. What two? Katamā dve? ā€˜See evil as evilā€™ā€”ā€˜Pāpaṁ pāpakato passathā’ti—this is the first approach to teaching Dhamma. ayaṁ paį¹hamā dhammadesanā; ā€˜Having seen evil as evil, be disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed from itā€™ā€”ā€˜pāpaṁ pāpakato disvā tattha nibbindatha virajjatha vimuccathā’ti—this is the second approach to teaching Dhamma. ayaṁ dutiyā dhammadesanā. The Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has these two approaches to teaching Dhamma.ā€ Tathāgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammāsambuddhassa imā dve dhammadesanā pariyāyena bhavantÄ«ā€ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

ā€œSee the two approaches for ā€œTathāgatassa buddhassa, explaining the Dhamma sabbabhÅ«tānukampino; used by the Realized One, the Buddha, Pariyāyavacanaṁ passa, compassionate for all beings: dve ca dhammā pakāsitā.

see that that is evil, Pāpakaṁ passatha cetaṁ, and be dispassionate towards it. tattha cāpi virajjatha; Then, with a mind free of desire, Tato virattacittāse, you will make an end of suffering.ā€ dukkhassantaṁ karissathāā€ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Dutiyaṁ.
