Teaching DesanÄsutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āMendicants, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has two approaches to teaching Dhamma. āTathÄgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammÄsambuddhassa dve dhammadesanÄ pariyÄyena bhavanti. What two? KatamÄ dve? āSee evil as evilāāāPÄpaį¹ pÄpakato passathÄātiāthis is the first approach to teaching Dhamma. ayaį¹ paį¹hamÄ dhammadesanÄ; āHaving seen evil as evil, be disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed from itāāāpÄpaį¹ pÄpakato disvÄ tattha nibbindatha virajjatha vimuccathÄātiāthis is the second approach to teaching Dhamma. ayaį¹ dutiyÄ dhammadesanÄ. The Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha has these two approaches to teaching Dhamma.ā TathÄgatassa, bhikkhave, arahato sammÄsambuddhassa imÄ dve dhammadesanÄ pariyÄyena bhavantÄ«āti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āSee the two approaches for āTathÄgatassa buddhassa, explaining the Dhamma sabbabhÅ«tÄnukampino; used by the Realized One, the Buddha, PariyÄyavacanaį¹ passa, compassionate for all beings: dve ca dhammÄ pakÄsitÄ.
see that that is evil, PÄpakaį¹ passatha cetaį¹, and be dispassionate towards it. tattha cÄpi virajjatha; Then, with a mind free of desire, Tato virattacittÄse, you will make an end of suffering.ā dukkhassantaį¹ karissathÄāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
