Misconceptions Diṭṭhigatasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Overcome by two misconceptions, mendicants, some gods and humans get stuck, some overreach, while those with vision see. “Dvīhi, bhikkhave, diṭṭhigatehi pariyuṭṭhitā devamanussā olīyanti eke, atidhāvanti eke; cakkhumanto ca passanti.

And how do some get stuck? Kathañca, bhikkhave, olīyanti eke? Because of love, delight, and enjoyment of existence, when the Dhamma is being taught for the cessation of existence, the minds of some gods and humans do not leap forth, gain confidence, settle down, and become decided. Bhavārāmā, bhikkhave, devamanussā bhavaratā bhavasammuditā tesaṁ bhavanirodhāya dhamme desiyamāne cittaṁ na pakkhandati na pasīdati na santiṭṭhati nādhimuccati. That is how some get stuck. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, olīyanti eke.

And how do some overreach? Kathañca, bhikkhave, atidhāvanti eke? Some, becoming horrified, repelled, and disgusted with existence, delight in nonexistence: Bhaveneva kho paneke aṭṭīyamānā harāyamānā jigucchamānā vibhavaṁ abhinandanti—‘When this self is annihilated and destroyed when the body breaks up, and doesn’t exist after death: yato kira, bho, ayaṁ attā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā ucchijjati vinassati na hoti paraṁ maraṇā; that is peaceful, that is sublime, that is how it is.’ etaṁ santaṁ etaṁ paṇītaṁ etaṁ yāthāvanti. That is how some overreach. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, atidhāvanti eke.

And how do those with vision see? Kathañca, bhikkhave, cakkhumanto passanti? It’s when a mendicant sees what has come to be as having come to be. Idha bhikkhu bhūtaṁ bhūtato passati; Seeing this, they are practicing for disillusionment, dispassion, and cessation regarding what has come to be. bhūtaṁ bhūtato disvā bhūtassa nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hoti. That is how those with vision see.” Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, cakkhumanto passantī”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Those who see what has come to be <j>as having come to be, “Ye bhūtaṁ bhūtato disvā, and see the transcendence of what has come to be, bhūtassa ca atikkamaṁ; are freed in accord with the truth, Yathābhūte vimuccanti, with the ending of craving for continued existence. bhavataṇhā parikkhayā.

They completely understand what has come to be, Sa ve bhūtapariñño so, rid of craving for rebirth in this or that state. vītataṇho bhavābhave; When what has come to be ceases to be, Bhūtassa vibhavā bhikkhu, a mendicant does not come back to future lives.” nāgacchati punabbhavan”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Dvādasamaṁ.

Dutiyo vaggo.

Tassuddānaṁ

Dve indriyā dve tapanīyā, sīlena apare duve; Anottāpī kuhanā dve ca, saṁvejanīyena te dasa.

Vitakkā desanā vijjā, paññā dhammena pañcamaṁ; Ajātaṁ dhātusallānaṁ, sikkhā jāgariyena ca; Apāyadiṭṭhiyā ceva, bāvīsati pakāsitāti.

Dukanipāto niṭṭhito.
