Searches (2nd) Dutiyaesanāsutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

ā€œMendicants, there are these three searches. ā€œTisso imā, bhikkhave, esanā. What three? Katamā tisso? The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path. Kāmesanā, bhavesanā, brahmacariyesanā—These are the three searches.ā€ imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanāā€ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

ā€œThe search for sensual pleasures, for a good rebirth, ā€œKāmesanā bhavesanā, and the search for a spiritual path; brahmacariyesanā saha; the holding tight to the thought, ā€˜this is the truth’, Iti saccaparāmāso, and the mass of grounds for views—diį¹į¹hiį¹į¹hānā samussayā.

for one detached from all lusts, Sabbarāgavirattassa, freed by the ending of craving, taṇhakkhayavimuttino; that searching has been relinquished, Esanā paį¹inissaį¹į¹hā, and those viewpoints eradicated. diį¹į¹hiį¹į¹hānā samÅ«hatā; With the ending of searches, a mendicant Esanānaṁ khayā bhikkhu, is free of hope and indecision.ā€ nirāso akathaį¹…kathÄ«ā€ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Chaṭṭhaṁ.
