A Friend (2nd) Dutiyamittasutta

ā€œMendicants, when a friend has seven qualities you should associate with, accompany, and attend them, even if they drive you away. ā€œSattahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu mitto sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupāsitabbo api panujjamānenapi. What seven? Katamehi sattahi? They’re likable, agreeable, respected, and admired. They admonish you and they accept admonishment. They speak on deep matters. And they don’t urge you to do bad things. Piyo ca hoti manāpo ca garu ca bhāvanÄ«yo ca vattā ca vacanakkhamo ca gambhÄ«raƱca kathaṁ kattā hoti, no ca aį¹­į¹­hāne niyojeti. When a friend has these seven qualities you should associate with, accompany, and attend them, even if they drive you away. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, sattahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu mitto sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupāsitabbo api panujjamānenapÄ«ti.

They’re liked, respected, and admired, Piyo garu bhāvanÄ«yo, an admonisher who accepts admonishment, vattā ca vacanakkhamo; speaks on deep matters, GambhÄ«raƱca kathaṁ kattā, and doesn’t urge you to do bad. no caį¹­į¹­hāne niyojako.

The individual in whom Yamhi etāni į¹­hānāni, these things are found is your friend. saṁvijjantÄ«dha puggale; If you want to have a friend, So mitto mittakāmena, benevolent and sympathetic, atthakāmānukampato; then even if they chase you away, Api nāsiyamānena, you should keep company with that sort.ā€ bhajitabbo tathāvidhoā€ti.
