A Friend (2nd) Dutiyamittasutta
āMendicants, when a friend has seven qualities you should associate with, accompany, and attend them, even if they drive you away. āSattahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu mitto sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupÄsitabbo api panujjamÄnenapi. What seven? Katamehi sattahi? Theyāre likable, agreeable, respected, and admired. They admonish you and they accept admonishment. They speak on deep matters. And they donāt urge you to do bad things. Piyo ca hoti manÄpo ca garu ca bhÄvanÄ«yo ca vattÄ ca vacanakkhamo ca gambhÄ«raƱca kathaį¹ kattÄ hoti, no ca aį¹į¹hÄne niyojeti. When a friend has these seven qualities you should associate with, accompany, and attend them, even if they drive you away. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, sattahi dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu mitto sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupÄsitabbo api panujjamÄnenapÄ«ti.
Theyāre liked, respected, and admired, Piyo garu bhÄvanÄ«yo, an admonisher who accepts admonishment, vattÄ ca vacanakkhamo; speaks on deep matters, GambhÄ«raƱca kathaį¹ kattÄ, and doesnāt urge you to do bad. no caį¹į¹hÄne niyojako.
The individual in whom Yamhi etÄni į¹hÄnÄni, these things are found is your friend. saį¹vijjantÄ«dha puggale; If you want to have a friend, So mitto mittakÄmena, benevolent and sympathetic, atthakÄmÄnukampato; then even if they chase you away, Api nÄsiyamÄnena, you should keep company with that sort.ā bhajitabbo tathÄvidhoāti.
