Sources (2nd) Dutiyanidānasutta

ā€œMendicants, there are these three sources that give rise to deeds. ā€œTīṇimāni, bhikkhave, nidānāni kammānaṁ samudayāya. What three? Katamāni tīṇi?

Desire comes up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present. AtÄ«te, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati; anāgate, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati; paccuppanne, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati. And how does desire come up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present? KathaƱca, bhikkhave, atÄ«te chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati? In your heart you think about and consider things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present. AtÄ«te, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha cetasā anuvitakketi anuvicāreti. When you do this, desire comes up, Tassa atÄ«te chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha cetasā anuvitakkayato anuvicārayato chando jāyati. and you get attached to those things. Chandajāto tehi dhammehi saṁyutto hoti. This lust in the heart is what I call a fetter. Etamahaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁyojanaṁ vadāmi yo cetaso sārāgo. That’s how desire comes up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, atÄ«te chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, anāgate chandarāgaṭṭhāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati? Anāgate, bhikkhave, chandarāgaṭṭhāniye dhamme ārabbha cetasā anuvitakketi anuvicāreti. Tassa anāgate chandarāgaṭṭhāniye dhamme ārabbha cetasā anuvitakkayato anuvicārayato chando jāyati. Chandajāto tehi dhammehi saṁyutto hoti. Etamahaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁyojanaṁ vadāmi yo cetaso sārāgo. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, anāgate chandarāgaṭṭhāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, paccuppanne chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati? Paccuppanne, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha cetasā anuvitakketi anuvicāreti. Tassa paccuppanne chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha cetasā anuvitakkayato anuvicārayato chando jāyati. Chandajāto tehi dhammehi saṁyutto hoti. Etamahaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁyojanaṁ vadāmi yo cetaso sārāgo. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paccuppanne chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati. These are three sources that give rise to deeds. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi nidānāni kammānaṁ samudayāya.

There are these three sources that give rise to deeds. Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, nidānāni kammānaṁ samudayāya. What three? Katamāni tīṇi? Desire doesn’t come up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present. AtÄ«te, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati; anāgate, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati; paccuppanne, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati. And how does desire not come up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present? KathaƱca, bhikkhave, atÄ«te chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati? You understand the future result of things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present. AtÄ«tānaṁ, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniyānaṁ dhammānaṁ āyatiṁ vipākaṁ pajānāti. When you know this, you grow disillusioned, Āyatiṁ vipākaṁ viditvā tadabhinivatteti. your heart becomes dispassionate, and you see it with penetrating wisdom. Tadabhinivattetvā cetasā abhinivijjhitvā paƱƱāya ativijjha passati. That’s how desire doesn’t come up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, atÄ«te chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, anāgate chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati? Anāgatānaṁ, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniyānaṁ dhammānaṁ āyatiṁ vipākaṁ pajānāti. Āyatiṁ vipākaṁ viditvā tadabhinivatteti. Tadabhinivattetvā cetasā abhinivijjhitvā paƱƱāya ativijjha passati. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, anāgate chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, paccuppanne chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati? Paccuppannānaṁ, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniyānaṁ dhammānaṁ āyatiṁ vipākaṁ pajānāti, āyatiṁ vipākaṁ viditvā tadabhinivatteti, tadabhinivattetvā cetasā abhinivijjhitvā paƱƱāya ativijjha passati. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paccuppanne chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati. These are three sources that give rise to deeds.ā€ Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi nidānāni kammānaṁ samudayāyÄā€ti.
