- Chapter Two Dutiyavagga
Greed (2nd) Dutiyarāgasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
“Whoever has not given up greed, hate, and delusion “Yassa kassaci, bhikkhave, bhikkhussa vā bhikkhuniyā vā rāgo appahīno, doso appahīno, moho appahīno—is said to have not crossed over the ocean with its waves and whirlpools, its saltwater crocodiles and monsters. ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ‘atiṇṇo samuddaṁ saūmiṁ savīciṁ sāvaṭṭaṁ sagahaṁ sarakkhasaṁ’. Whoever has given up greed, hate, and delusion Yassa kassaci, bhikkhave, bhikkhussa vā bhikkhuniyā vā rāgo pahīno, doso pahīno, moho pahīno—is said to have crossed over the ocean with its waves and whirlpools, its saltwater crocodiles and monsters. Crossed over and gone beyond, that brahmin stands on the shore.” ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ‘atari samuddaṁ saūmiṁ savīciṁ sāvaṭṭaṁ sagahaṁ sarakkhasaṁ, tiṇṇo pāraṅgato thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇo’”ti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
“Those in whom greed, hate, and ignorance “Yassa rāgo ca doso ca, have faded away, Avijjā ca virājitā; have crossed the ocean so hard to cross, Somaṁ samuddaṁ sagahaṁ sarakkhasaṁ, with its saltwater crocodiles and monsters, <j>its waves and dangers. Saūmibhayaṁ duttaraṁ accatāri.
They’ve slipped their chains, given up death, and have no attachments. Saṅgātigo maccujaho nirūpadhi, They’ve given up suffering, <j>so there are no more future lives. Pahāsi dukkhaṁ apunabbhavāya; They’ve disappeared and cannot be defined; Atthaṅgato so na pamāṇameti, they’ve confounded the King of Death, I say.” Amohayi maccurājanti brūmī”ti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
Dasamaṁ.
Dutiyo vaggo.
