One Thing Ekadhammasutta

ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that, when it is developed and cultivated like this, leads to giving up the things that tighten the fetters like the seven awakening factors. ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi, yo evaṁ bhāvito bahulÄ«kato saṁyojanÄ«yānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya saṁvattati, yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaį¹…gā. What seven? Katame satta? The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity. Satisambojjhaį¹…go …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…go. And how are the seven awakening factors developed and cultivated so as to lead to giving up the things that tighten the fetters? Kathaṁ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaį¹…gā kathaṁ bahulÄ«katā saṁyojanÄ«yānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya saṁvattanti?

It’s when a mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaį¹…gaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ …pe… and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ. That’s how the seven awakening factors are developed and cultivated so as to lead to giving up the things that tighten the fetters. Evaṁ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaį¹…gā evaṁ bahulÄ«katā saṁyojanÄ«yānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya saṁvattanti.

And what are the things that tighten the fetters? Katame ca, bhikkhave, saṁyojanÄ«yā dhammā? The eye is something that tightens the fetters. Cakkhu, bhikkhave, saṁyojanÄ«yo dhammo. This is where these fetters, shackles, and attachments arise. Etthete uppajjanti saṁyojanavinibandhā ajjhosānā …pe… The ear … nose … tongue … body … jivhā saṁyojanÄ«yā dhammā. Etthete uppajjanti saṁyojanavinibandhā ajjhosānā …pe… mind is something that tightens the fetters. mano saṁyojanÄ«yo dhammo. This is where these fetters, shackles, and attachments arise. Etthete uppajjanti saṁyojanavinibandhā ajjhosānā. These are called the things that tighten the fetters.ā€ Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, saṁyojanÄ«yā dhammāā€ti.

Navamaṁ.
