The Donkey Gadrabhasutta
āSuppose, mendicants, a donkey followed behind a herd of cattle, thinking: āSeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, gadrabho gogaį¹aį¹ piį¹į¹hito piį¹į¹hito anubandho hoti: āI can moo too! I can moo too!ā āahampi dammo, ahampi dammoāti. But it doesnāt look like a cow, or sound like a cow, or leave a footprint like a cow. Tassa na tÄdiso vaį¹į¹o hoti seyyathÄpi gunnaį¹, na tÄdiso saro hoti seyyathÄpi gunnaį¹, na tÄdisaį¹ padaį¹ hoti seyyathÄpi gunnaį¹. Still it follows behind a herd of cattle, thinking: So gogaį¹aį¹yeva piį¹į¹hito piį¹į¹hito anubandho hoti: āI can moo too! I can moo too!ā āahampi dammo, ahampi dammoāti.
In the same way, some mendicant follows behind the mendicant Saį¹ gha, thinking: Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco bhikkhu bhikkhusaį¹ ghaį¹ piį¹į¹hito piį¹į¹hito anubandho hoti: āIām a monk too! Iām a monk too!ā āahampi bhikkhu, ahampi bhikkhÅ«āti. But they donāt have the same enthusiasm for undertaking the training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom as the other mendicants. Tassa na tÄdiso chando hoti adhisÄ«lasikkhÄsamÄdÄne seyyathÄpi aƱƱesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹, na tÄdiso chando hoti adhicittasikkhÄsamÄdÄne seyyathÄpi aƱƱesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹, na tÄdiso chando hoti adhipaƱƱÄsikkhÄsamÄdÄne seyyathÄpi aƱƱesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹. Still they follow behind the mendicant Saį¹gha, thinking: So bhikkhusaį¹ ghaį¹yeva piį¹į¹hito piį¹į¹hito anubandho hoti: āIām a monk too! Iām a monk too!ā āahampi bhikkhu, ahampi bhikkhÅ«āti.
So you should train like this: TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: āWe will have keen enthusiasm for undertaking the training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.ā ātibbo no chando bhavissati adhisÄ«lasikkhÄsamÄdÄne, tibbo no chando bhavissati adhicittasikkhÄsamÄdÄne, tibbo no chando bhavissati adhipaƱƱÄsikkhÄsamÄdÄneāti. Thatās how you should train.ā EvaƱhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbanāti.
