“Mendicants, there are these four ties. “Cattārome, bhikkhave, ganthā. What four? Katame cattāro? The personal ties to covetousness, ill will, misapprehension of precepts and observances, and the insistence that this is the only truth. Abhijjhā kāyagantho, byāpādo kāyagantho, sīlabbataparāmāso kāyagantho, idaṁsaccābhiniveso kāyagantho—These are the four ties. ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro ganthā.

The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these four ties.” Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, catunnaṁ ganthānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti.
