Gayākassapa Gayākassapattheragāthā
Three times a day—“Pāto majjhanhikaṁ sāyaṁ, morning, midday, and evening—tikkhattuṁ divasassahaṁ; I plunged into the water at Gayā Otariṁ udakaṁ sohaṁ, for the Gayā spring festival. gayāya gayaphagguyā.
“Any bad things I’ve done ‘Yaṁ mayā pakataṁ pāpaṁ, in previous lives, pubbe aññāsu jātisu; I’ll now rinse away right here”—Taṁ dānīdha pavāhemi’, such was the view I used to hold. evaṁdiṭṭhi pure ahuṁ.
Having heard the fine words, Sutvā subhāsitaṁ vācaṁ, a passage meaningful and principled, dhammatthasahitaṁ padaṁ; I rationally reflected Tathaṁ yāthāvakaṁ atthaṁ, on the true, essential goal. yoniso paccavekkhisaṁ.
I’ve washed away all bad things; Ninhātasabbapāpomhi, I’m stainless, clean, pristine; nimmalo payato suci; the pure heir of the pure one, Suddho suddhassa dāyādo, a true-born son of the Buddha. putto buddhassa oraso.
When I plunged into the eightfold stream, Ogayhaṭṭhaṅgikaṁ sotaṁ, all bad things were rinsed away. sabbapāpaṁ pavāhayiṁ; I’ve attained the three knowledges Tisso vijjā ajjhagamiṁ, and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions. kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.
