The Gotamaka Shrine Gotamakacetiyasutta

At one time the Buddha was staying near VesālÄ«, at the Gotamaka Shrine. Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati gotamake cetiye. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi: ā€œMendicants!ā€ ā€œbhikkhavoā€ti.

ā€œVenerable sir,ā€ they replied. ā€œBhadanteā€ti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuṁ. The Buddha said this: Bhagavā etadavoca:

ā€œMendicants, I teach based on direct knowledge, not without direct knowledge. ā€œAbhiƱƱāyāhaṁ, bhikkhave, dhammaṁ desemi, no anabhiƱƱāya. I teach with reasons, not without them. Sanidānāhaṁ, bhikkhave, dhammaṁ desemi, no anidānaṁ. I teach with a demonstrable basis, not without it. Sappāṭihāriyāhaṁ, bhikkhave, dhammaṁ desemi, no appāṭihāriyaṁ. Since this is so, you should follow my advice and instruction. Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, abhiƱƱāya dhammaṁ desayato no anabhiƱƱāya, sanidānaṁ dhammaṁ desayato no anidānaṁ, sappāṭihāriyaṁ dhammaṁ desayato no appāṭihāriyaṁ, karaṇīyo ovādo, karaṇīyā anusāsanÄ«. This is enough for you to feel joyful, delighted, and happy: AlaƱca pana vo, bhikkhave, tuį¹į¹hiyā, alaṁ attamanatāya, alaṁ somanassāya: ā€˜The Blessed One is a fully awakened Buddha! The teaching is well explained! The Saį¹…gha is practicing well!ā€™ā€ ā€˜sammāsambuddho bhagavā, svākkhāto dhammo, suppaį¹ipanno saį¹…ghoā€™ā€ti.

That is what the Buddha said. Idamavoca bhagavā. Satisfied, the mendicants approved what the Buddha said. Attamanā te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti. And while this discourse was being spoken, the thousandfold galaxy shook. ImasmiƱca pana veyyākaraṇasmiṁ bhaƱƱamāne sahassÄ« lokadhātu akampitthāti.

Tatiyaṁ.
