Inspiring All Around: the Three Knowledges VijjÄsutta
āA mendicant is faithful, but not ethical. āSaddho ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti, no ca sÄ«lavÄ. So theyāre incomplete in that respect, Evaį¹ so tenaį¹ gena aparipÅ«ro hoti. and should fulfill it, thinking: Tena taį¹ aį¹ gaį¹ paripÅ«retabbaį¹: āHow can I become faithful and ethical?ā ākintÄhaį¹ saddho ca assaį¹ sÄ«lavÄ cÄāti. When the mendicant is faithful and ethical, theyāre complete in that respect. Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, sÄ«lavÄ ca, evaį¹ so tenaį¹ gena paripÅ«ro hoti.
A mendicant is faithful and ethical, but not learned ⦠Saddho ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti sÄ«lavÄ ca, no ca bahussuto bahussuto ca, theyāre not a Dhamma speaker ⦠no ca dhammakathiko ā¦pe⦠they donāt frequent assemblies ⦠dhammakathiko ca, no ca parisÄvacaro parisÄvacaro ca, they donāt teach Dhamma to the assembly with assurance ⦠no ca visÄrado parisÄya dhammaį¹ deseti visÄrado ca parisÄya dhammaį¹ deseti, theyāre not an expert in the monastic law ⦠no ca vinayadharo vinayadharo ca, they donāt recollect their many kinds of past lives ⦠no ca anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivÄsaį¹ anussarati, seyyathidaį¹āekampi jÄtiį¹ dvepi jÄtiyo ā¦pe⦠iti sÄkÄraį¹ sauddesaį¹ anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivÄsaį¹ anussarati. AnekavihitaƱca ā¦pe⦠pubbenivÄsaį¹ anussarati, they donāt, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, see sentient beings passing away and being reborn ⦠no ca dibbena cakkhunÄ visuddhena atikkantamÄnusakena ā¦pe⦠yathÄkammÅ«page satte pajÄnÄti dibbena ca cakkhunÄ visuddhena atikkantamÄnusakena ā¦pe⦠they donāt realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. yathÄkammÅ«page satte pajÄnÄti, no ca ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ ā¦pe⦠sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharati. When they are faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, an expert in the training, one who recollects their many kinds of past lives, one who with clairvoyance that surpasses the human sees sentient beings passing away and being reborn, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements, Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, sÄ«lavÄ ca, bahussuto ca, dhammakathiko ca, parisÄvacaro ca, visÄrado ca parisÄya dhammaį¹ deseti, vinayadharo ca, anekavihitaƱca pubbenivÄsaį¹ anussarati, seyyathidaį¹āekampi jÄtiį¹ dvepi jÄtiyo ā¦pe⦠iti sÄkÄraį¹ sauddesaį¹ anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivÄsaį¹ anussarati, dibbena ca cakkhunÄ visuddhena atikkantamÄnusakena ā¦pe⦠yathÄkammÅ«page satte pajÄnÄti, ÄsavÄnaƱca khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharati. theyāre complete in that respect. Evaį¹ so tenaį¹ gena paripÅ«ro hoti. A mendicant who possesses these ten qualities is impressive all around, and is complete in every respect.ā Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dasahi dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu samantapÄsÄdiko ca hoti sabbÄkÄraparipÅ«ro cÄāti.
