Inspiring All Around: the Three Knowledges Vijjāsutta

ā€œA mendicant is faithful, but not ethical. ā€œSaddho ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti, no ca sÄ«lavā. So they’re incomplete in that respect, Evaṁ so tenaį¹…gena aparipÅ«ro hoti. and should fulfill it, thinking: Tena taṁ aį¹…gaṁ paripÅ«retabbaṁ: ā€˜How can I become faithful and ethical?’ ā€˜kintāhaṁ saddho ca assaṁ sÄ«lavā cā’ti. When the mendicant is faithful and ethical, they’re complete in that respect. Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, sÄ«lavā ca, evaṁ so tenaį¹…gena paripÅ«ro hoti.

A mendicant is faithful and ethical, but not learned … Saddho ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti sÄ«lavā ca, no ca bahussuto bahussuto ca, they’re not a Dhamma speaker … no ca dhammakathiko …pe… they don’t frequent assemblies … dhammakathiko ca, no ca parisāvacaro parisāvacaro ca, they don’t teach Dhamma to the assembly with assurance … no ca visārado parisāya dhammaṁ deseti visārado ca parisāya dhammaṁ deseti, they’re not an expert in the monastic law … no ca vinayadharo vinayadharo ca, they don’t recollect their many kinds of past lives … no ca anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati, seyyathidaṁ—ekampi jātiṁ dvepi jātiyo …pe… iti sākāraṁ sauddesaṁ anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati. So they’re incomplete in that respect, Evaṁ so tenaį¹…gena aparipÅ«ro hoti. and should fulfill it, thinking: Tena taṁ aį¹…gaṁ paripÅ«retabbaṁ: ā€˜How can I become faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, an expert in the training, one who recollects their many kinds of past lives, one who with clairvoyance that surpasses the human sees sentient beings passing away and being reborn, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements?’

When they are faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, an expert in the training, one who recollects their many kinds of past lives, one who with clairvoyance that surpasses the human sees sentient beings passing away and being reborn, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements, Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, sÄ«lavā ca, bahussuto ca, dhammakathiko ca, parisāvacaro ca, visārado ca parisāya dhammaṁ deseti, vinayadharo ca, anekavihitaƱca pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati, seyyathidaṁ—ekampi jātiṁ dvepi jātiyo …pe… iti sākāraṁ sauddesaṁ anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati, dibbena ca cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena …pe… yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti, āsavānaƱca khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paƱƱāvimuttiṁ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaṁ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. they’re complete in that respect. Evaṁ so tenaį¹…gena paripÅ«ro hoti. A mendicant who possesses these ten qualities is impressive all around, and is complete in every respect.ā€ Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dasahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu samantapāsādiko ca hoti sabbākāraparipÅ«ro cāā€ti.
