At Isigili Isigilisutta
So I have heard. Evaṁ me sutaṁ—At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Isigili Mountain. ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati isigilismiṁ pabbate. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “Mendicants!” “bhikkhavo”ti.
“Venerable sir,” they replied. “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. The Buddha said this: Bhagavā etadavoca:
“Mendicants, do you see that Mount Vebhāra?” “Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ vebhāraṁ pabbatan”ti?
“Yes, sir.” “Evaṁ, bhante”.
“It used to have a different label and description. “Etassapi kho, bhikkhave, vebhārassa pabbatassa aññāva samaññā ahosi aññā paññatti. Do you see that Mount Paṇḍava?” Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ paṇḍavaṁ pabbatan”ti?
“Yes, sir.” “Evaṁ, bhante”.
“It too used to have a different label and description. “Etassapi kho, bhikkhave, paṇḍavassa pabbatassa aññāva samaññā ahosi aññā paññatti. Do you see that Mount Vepulla?” Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ vepullaṁ pabbatan”ti?
“Yes, sir.” “Evaṁ, bhante”.
“It too used to have a different label and description. “Etassapi kho, bhikkhave, vepullassa pabbatassa aññāva samaññā ahosi aññā paññatti. Do you see that Mount Vulture’s Peak?” Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ gijjhakūṭaṁ pabbatan”ti?
“Yes, sir.” “Evaṁ, bhante”.
“It too used to have a different label and description. “Etassapi kho, bhikkhave, gijjhakūṭassa pabbatassa aññāva samaññā ahosi aññā paññatti. Do you see that Mount Isigili?” Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, imaṁ isigiliṁ pabbatan”ti?
“Yes, sir.” “Evaṁ, bhante”.
“It used to have exactly the same label and description. “Imassa kho pana, bhikkhave, isigilissa pabbatassa esāva samaññā ahosi esā paññatti.
Once upon a time, five hundred Independent Buddhas dwelt for a long time on this Isigili. Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, pañca paccekabuddhasatāni imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsino ahesuṁ. They were seen entering the mountain, but after entering were seen no more. Te imaṁ pabbataṁ pavisantā dissanti, paviṭṭhā na dissanti. When people noticed this they said: Tamenaṁ manussā disvā evamāhaṁsu: ‘That mountain swallows these seers!’ ‘ayaṁ pabbato ime isī gilatī’ti; That’s how it came to be known as Isigili, the “seer-swallower”. ‘isigili isigili’ tveva samaññā udapādi.
I shall declare the names of the Independent Buddhas; Ācikkhissāmi, bhikkhave, paccekabuddhānaṁ nāmāni; I shall extol the names of the Independent Buddhas; kittayissāmi, bhikkhave, paccekabuddhānaṁ nāmāni; I shall teach the names of the Independent Buddhas. desessāmi, bhikkhave, paccekabuddhānaṁ nāmāni. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.” Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.
“Yes, sir,” they replied. “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. The Buddha said this: Bhagavā etadavoca:
“The independent Buddhas who dwelt for a long time on this Isigili were named Ariṭṭha, “Ariṭṭho nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; Upariṭṭha, upariṭṭho nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; Tagarasikhī, tagarasikhī nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; Yasassin, yasassī nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; Sudassana, sudassano nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; Piyadassin, piyadassī nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; Gandhāra, gandhāro nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; Piṇḍola, piṇḍolo nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; Upāsabha, upāsabho nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; Nīta, nīto nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; Tatha, tatho nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi, Sutavā, sutavā nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; and Bhāvitatta. bhāvitatto nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi.
Those saintly beings, untroubled, <j>with no need for hope, Ye sattasārā anīghā nirāsā, who each achieved awakening independently; Paccekamevajjhagamaṁsu bodhiṁ; hear me extol their names, Tesaṁ visallāna naruttamānaṁ, the supreme persons, free of thorns. Nāmāni me kittayato suṇātha.
Ariṭṭha, Upariṭṭha, Tagarasikhī, Yasassin, Ariṭṭho upariṭṭho tagarasikhī yasassī, Sudassana, and Piyadassin the awakened; Sudassano piyadassī ca susambuddho; Gandhāra, Piṇḍola, and Upāsabha, Gandhāro piṇḍolo upāsabho ca, Nīta, Tatha, Sutavā, and Bhāvitatta. Nīto tatho sutavā bhāvitatto.
Sumbha, Subha, Methula, and Aṭṭhama, Sumbho subho matulo aṭṭhamo ca, then Assumegha, Anīgha, and Sudāṭha, Athassumegho anīgho sudāṭho; Independent Buddhas, <j>enders of the conduit to rebirth; Paccekabuddhā bhavanettikhīṇā, and Hiṅgū and Hiṅga the mighty. Hiṅgū ca hiṅgo ca mahānubhāvā.
Two sages named Jāli, and Aṭṭhaka; Dve jālino munino aṭṭhako ca, then the awakened one Kosala, then Subāhu; Atha kosallo buddho atho subāhu; Upanemi, Nemi, and Santacitta, Upanemiso nemiso santacitto, right and true, stainless and astute. Sacco tatho virajo paṇḍito ca.
Kāḷa and Upakāḷa, Vijita and Jita, Kāḷūpakāḷā vijito jito ca, Aṅga and Paṅga, and Guttijita too; Aṅgo ca paṅgo ca guttijito ca; Passin gave up attachment, suffering’s root, Passi jahi upadhidukkhamūlaṁ, while Aparājita defeated Māra’s power. Aparājito mārabalaṁ ajesi.
Satthar, Pavattar, Sarabhaṅga, Lomahaṁsa, Satthā pavattā sarabhaṅgo lomahaṁso, Uccaṅgamāya, Asita, Anāsava, Uccaṅgamāyo asito anāsavo; Manomaya, and Bandhumā the cutter of conceit, Manomayo mānacchido ca bandhumā, then Adhimutta, and Ketumā the immaculate. Tadādhimutto vimalo ca ketumā.
Ketumbharāga, Mātaṅga, and Ariya, Ketumbharāgo ca mātaṅgo ariyo, then Accuta, Accutagāma, and Byāmaka, Athaccuto accutagāmabyāmako; Sumaṅgala, Dabbila, Supatiṭṭhita, Sumaṅgalo dabbilo supatiṭṭhito, Asayha, Khemābhirata, and Sorata. Asayho khemābhirato ca sorato.
Durannaya, Saṅgha, and also Ujjaya, Durannayo saṅgho athopi ujjayo, another sage, Sayha of peerless effort. Aparo muni sayho anomanikkamo; There are twelve Ānandas, Nandas, and Upanandas, Ānando nando upanando dvādasa, and Bhāradvāja, bearing his final body. Bhāradvājo antimadehadhārī.
Bodhi, Mahānāma, and also Uttara, Bodhi mahānāmo athopi uttaro, Kesī, Sikhī, Sundara, and Bhāradvāja, Kesī sikhī sundaro dvārabhājo; Tissa and Upatissa, <j>who’ve both cut the bonds to rebirth, Tissūpatissā bhavabandhanacchidā, Upasīdarī and Sīdarī, who’ve both cut off craving. Upasikhi taṇhacchido ca sikhari.
Maṅgala was awakened, free of greed, Buddho ahu maṅgalo vītarāgo, Usabha cut the net, the root of suffering, Usabhacchidā jāliniṁ dukkhamūlaṁ; Upanīta who attained the state of peace, Santaṁ padaṁ ajjhagamopanīto, Uposatha, Sundara, and Saccanāma. Uposatho sundaro saccanāmo.
Jeta, Jayanta, Paduma, and Uppala; Jeto jayanto padumo uppalo ca, Padumuttara, Rakkhita, and Pabbata, Padumuttaro rakkhito pabbato ca; Mānatthaddha, beautiful and free of greed, Mānatthaddho sobhito vītarāgo, and the Buddha Kaṇha, his mind well freed. Kaṇho ca buddho suvimuttacitto.
These and other mighty ones <j>awakened independently, Ete ca aññe ca mahānubhāvā, enders of the conduit to rebirth—Paccekabuddhā bhavanettikhīṇā; honor these great seers <j>who have slipped all chains, Te sabbasaṅgātigate mahesī, fully quenched, limitless.” Parinibbute vandatha appameyye”ti.
Isigilisuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ chaṭṭhaṁ.
