At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Standing to one side, that deity spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

“How many sleep among the waking? “Kati jāgarataṁ suttā, How many wake among the sleeping? kati suttesu jāgarā; By how many do you gather dust? Katibhi rajamādeti, By how many are you cleansed?” katibhi parisujjhatī”ti.

“Five sleep among the waking. “Pañca jāgarataṁ suttā, Five wake among the sleeping. pañca suttesu jāgarā; By five you gather dust. Pañcabhi rajamādeti, By five you’re cleansed.” pañcabhi parisujjhatī”ti.
