Wake Up JÄgariyasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āA mendicant should meditate wakeful, mendicants, mindful and aware, joyful and clear, and at times discern the skillful qualities in that state. āJÄgaro cassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vihareyya sato sampajÄno samÄhito pamudito vippasanno ca tattha kÄlavipassÄ« ca kusalesu dhammesu. A mendicant who meditates in this way can expect one of two results: JÄgarassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno viharato satassa sampajÄnassa samÄhitassa pamuditassa vippasannassa tattha kÄlavipassino kusalesu dhammesu dvinnaį¹ phalÄnaį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ phalaį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹ khaį¹āenlightenment in this very life, or if thereās something left over, non-return.ā diį¹į¹heva dhamme aƱƱÄ, sati vÄ upÄdisese anÄgÄmitÄāti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āListen up, wakeful ones! āJÄgarantÄ suį¹Äthetaį¹, And those asleep, wake up! ye suttÄ te pabujjhatha; Wakefulness is better than sleep, SuttÄ jÄgaritaį¹ seyyo, the wakeful have nothing to fear. natthi jÄgarato bhayaį¹.
Those who are wakeful, mindful and aware, Yo jÄgaro ca satimÄ sampajÄno, immersed in samÄdhi, joyful and clear, SamÄhito mudito vippasanno ca; rightly investigating the Dhamma in good time, KÄlena so sammÄ dhammaį¹ parivÄ«maį¹samÄno, at one, would banish the darkness. EkodibhÅ«to vihane tamaį¹ so.
Thatās why you should apply yourself to wakefulness. TasmÄ have jÄgariyaį¹ bhajetha, A keen and alert mendicant, possessing absorption, ÄtÄpÄ« bhikkhu nipako jhÄnalÄbhÄ«; having cut the fetter of birth and old age, Saį¹yojanaį¹ jÄtijarÄya chetvÄ, would experience supreme awakening <j>in this very life.ā Idheva sambodhimanuttaraį¹ phuseāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
