Jambuka Jambukattheragāthā

For fifty-five years “Pañcapaññāsavassāni, I wore dust and dirt. rajojallamadhārayiṁ; Eating one meal a month, Bhuñjanto māsikaṁ bhattaṁ, I tore out my hair and beard. kesamassuṁ alocayiṁ.

I stood on one foot; Ekapādena aṭṭhāsiṁ, I shunned seats; āsanaṁ parivajjayiṁ; I ate dried-out dung; Sukkhagūthāni ca khādiṁ, I didn’t accept food set aside for me. uddesañca na sādiyiṁ.

I did many deeds of this kind, Etādisaṁ karitvāna, which lead to a bad destination. bahuṁ duggatigāminaṁ; Swept away by a great flood, Vuyhamāno mahoghena, I went to the Buddha for refuge. buddhaṁ saraṇamāgamaṁ.

See the going for refuge! Saraṇagamanaṁ passa, Behold the clear rightness of the teaching! passa dhammasudhammataṁ; I’ve attained the three knowledges Tisso vijjā anuppattā, and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions. kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.
