Dreadlocked Ascetics Jaį¹ilasutta

So I have heard. Evaṁ me sutaṁ—At one time the Buddha was staying near Gayā on Gayā Head. ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā gayāyaṁ viharati gayāsÄ«se. Now at that time—during the cold spell when the snow falls in the January winter—many dreadlocked ascetics plunged in and out of the Gayā river. Plunging and showering, they served the sacred flame, thinking: Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā jaį¹ilā sÄ«tāsu hemantikāsu rattÄ«su antaraį¹į¹hake himapātasamaye gayāyaṁ ummujjantipi nimujjantipi, ummujjanimujjampi karonti osiƱcantipi, aggimpi juhanti: ā€œThrough this there is purity.ā€ ā€œiminā suddhÄ«ā€ti.

The Buddha saw them plunging in and out. Addasā kho bhagavā te sambahule jaį¹ile sÄ«tāsu hemantikāsu rattÄ«su antaraį¹į¹hake himapātasamaye gayāyaṁ ummujjantepi nimujjantepi ummujjanimujjampi karonte osiƱcantepi aggimpi juhante: ā€œiminā suddhÄ«ā€ti.

Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment: Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

ā€œPurity doesn’t come from water, ā€œNa udakena sucÄ« hoti, no matter how many people bathe there. bahvettha nhāyatÄ« jano; One who has truth and principle, Yamhi saccaƱca dhammo ca, they are pure, they are brahmins.ā€ so sucÄ« so ca brāhmaṇoā€ti.

Navamaṁ.
