With Revata the Doubter Kaṅkhārevatasutta

So I have heard. Evaṁ me sutaṁ—At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Now at that time Venerable Revata the Doubter was sitting not far from the Buddha, cross-legged, with his body straight, reviewing his own purification by traversing doubt. Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā kaṅkhārevato bhagavato avidūre nisinno hoti pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya attano kaṅkhāvitaraṇavisuddhiṁ paccavekkhamāno.

The Buddha saw him meditating there. Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ kaṅkhārevataṁ avidūre nisinnaṁ pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya attano kaṅkhāvitaraṇavisuddhiṁ paccavekkhamānaṁ.

Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment: Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

“Any doubts about this life or the next, “Yā kāci kaṅkhā idha vā huraṁ vā, about one’s own experiences or those of another: Sakavediyā vā paravediyā vā; those who meditate give them all up, Ye jhāyino tā pajahanti sabbā, keenly practicing the spiritual life.” Ātāpino brahmacariyaṁ carantā”ti.

Sattamaṁ.
