The Monkey King’s Conduct Kapirājacariya
“When I was a monkey “Yadā ahaṁ kapi āsiṁ, in a cleft on the riverbank, nadīkūle darīsaye; harassed by a crocodile Pīḷito susumārena, I could not get across. gamanaṁ na labhāmahaṁ.
Where I used to land Yamhokāse ahaṁ ṭhatvā, when jumping from the near shore to the far, orā pāraṁ patāmahaṁ; there crouched my deadly foe, Tatthacchi sattu vadhako, the baleful gharial. kumbhīlo luddadassano.
Reassuring me, he said ‘Come!’ So maṁ asaṁsi ‘ehī’ti, ‘I am coming,’ I said to him. ‘ahampemī’ti taṁ vatiṁ; Stepping on his head Tassa matthakamakkamma, I made it to the far bank. parakūle patiṭṭhahiṁ.
I spoke no lie to him, Na tassa alikaṁ bhaṇitaṁ, but acted according to my word. yathā vācaṁ akāsahaṁ; There is no-one to equal my truthfulness: Saccena me samo natthi, this is my perfection of truth.” esā me saccapāramī”ti.
Kapirājacariyaṁ sattamaṁ.
