A Farmer Kassakasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk about extinguishment. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā bhikkhÅ«naṁ nibbānapaį¹isaṁyuttāya dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti. And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening. Te ca bhikkhÅ« aį¹į¹hiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.

Then Māra thought, Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi: ā€œThe ascetic Gotama is giving a Dhamma talk about extinguishment … and the mendicants are listening well. ā€œayaṁ kho samaṇo gotamo bhikkhÅ«naṁ nibbānapaį¹isaṁyuttāya dhammiyā kathāya …pe… Why don’t I go and pull the wool over their eyes?ā€ yannÅ«nāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaį¹…kameyyaṁ vicakkhukammāyāā€ti.

Then Māra the Wicked manifested in the form of a farmer carrying a large plough on his shoulder. He held a long goad, his hair was messy, he was clad in sunn hemp, and his feet were muddy. He went up to the Buddha and said to him, Atha kho māro pāpimā kassakavaṇṇaṁ abhinimminitvā mahantaṁ naį¹…galaṁ khandhe karitvā dÄ«ghapācanayaį¹į¹hiṁ gahetvā haį¹ahaį¹akeso sāṇasāṭinivattho kaddamamakkhitehi pādehi yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œSo, ascetic, did you happen to see any oxen?ā€ ā€œapi, samaṇa, balÄ«badde addasāā€ti?

ā€œBut what have you to do with oxen, Wicked One?ā€ ā€œKiṁ pana, pāpima, te balÄ«baddehÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œMine alone, ascetic, is the eye, mine are sights, mine is the field of eye contact consciousness. ā€œMameva, samaṇa, cakkhu, mama rÅ«pā, mama cakkhusamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ. Where can you escape me, ascetic? Kuhiṁ me, samaṇa, gantvā mokkhasi? Mine alone is the ear … Mameva, samaṇa, sotaṁ, mama saddā …pe… nose … mameva, samaṇa, ghānaṁ, mama gandhā; tongue … mameva, samaṇa, jivhā, mama rasā; body … mameva, samaṇa, kāyo, mama phoį¹į¹habbā; mind, mine are ideas, mine is the field of mind contact consciousness. mameva, samaṇa, mano, mama dhammā, mama manosamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ. Where can you escape me, ascetic?ā€ Kuhiṁ me, samaṇa, gantvā mokkhasÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œYours alone, Wicked One, is the eye, yours are sights, yours is the field of eye contact consciousness. ā€œTaveva, pāpima, cakkhu, tava rÅ«pā, tava cakkhusamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ. Where there is no eye, no sights, no eye contact consciousness—you have no place there, Wicked One! Yattha ca kho, pāpima, natthi cakkhu, natthi rÅ«pā, natthi cakkhusamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ, agati tava tattha, pāpima. Yours alone is the ear … Taveva, pāpima, sotaṁ, tava saddā, tava sotasamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ. Yattha ca kho, pāpima, natthi sotaṁ, natthi saddā, natthi sotasamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ, agati tava tattha, pāpima. nose … Taveva, pāpima, ghānaṁ, tava gandhā, tava ghānasamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ. Yattha ca kho, pāpima, natthi ghānaṁ, natthi gandhā, natthi ghānasamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ, agati tava tattha, pāpima. tongue … Taveva, pāpima, jivhā, tava rasā, tava jivhāsamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ …pe… body … taveva, pāpima, kāyo, tava phoį¹į¹habbā, tava kāyasamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ …pe… mind, yours are ideas, yours is the field of mind contact consciousness. taveva, pāpima, mano, tava dhammā, tava manosamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ. Where there is no mind, no ideas, no mind contact consciousness—you have no place there, Wicked One!ā€ Yattha ca kho, pāpima, natthi mano, natthi dhammā, natthi manosamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ, agati tava tattha, pāpimāā€ti.

ā€œThe things they call ā€˜mine’, ā€œYaṁ vadanti mama yidanti, and those who say ā€˜it’s mine’: ye vadanti mamanti ca; if your mind remains there, Ettha ce te mano atthi, you won’t escape me, ascetic!ā€ na me samaṇa mokkhasÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œThe things they speak of aren’t mine; ā€œYaṁ vadanti na taṁ mayhaṁ, I’m not someone who speaks like that. ye vadanti na te ahaṁ; So know this, Wicked One: Evaṁ pāpima jānāhi, you won’t even see the path I take.ā€ na me maggampi dakkhasÄ«ā€ti.

Then Māra … vanished right there. Atha kho māro pāpimā …pe… tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti.
