A Farmer Kassakasutta
At SÄvatthÄ«. SÄvatthinidÄnaį¹.
Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk about extinguishment. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ nibbÄnapaį¹isaį¹yuttÄya dhammiyÄ kathÄya sandasseti samÄdapeti samuttejeti sampahaį¹seti. And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening. Te ca bhikkhÅ« aį¹į¹hiį¹ katvÄ manasi katvÄ sabbacetasÄ samannÄharitvÄ ohitasotÄ dhammaį¹ suį¹anti.
Then MÄra thought, Atha kho mÄrassa pÄpimato etadahosi: āThe ascetic Gotama is giving a Dhamma talk about extinguishment ⦠and the mendicants are listening well. āayaį¹ kho samaį¹o gotamo bhikkhÅ«naį¹ nibbÄnapaį¹isaį¹yuttÄya dhammiyÄ kathÄya ā¦pe⦠Why donāt I go and pull the wool over their eyes?ā yannÅ«nÄhaį¹ yena samaį¹o gotamo tenupasaį¹ kameyyaį¹ vicakkhukammÄyÄāti.
Then MÄra the Wicked manifested in the form of a farmer carrying a large plough on his shoulder. He held a long goad, his hair was messy, he was clad in sunn hemp, and his feet were muddy. He went up to the Buddha and said to him, Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ kassakavaį¹į¹aį¹ abhinimminitvÄ mahantaį¹ naį¹ galaį¹ khandhe karitvÄ dÄ«ghapÄcanayaį¹į¹hiį¹ gahetvÄ haį¹ahaį¹akeso sÄį¹asÄį¹inivattho kaddamamakkhitehi pÄdehi yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: āSo, ascetic, did you happen to see any oxen?ā āapi, samaį¹a, balÄ«badde addasÄāti?
āBut what have you to do with oxen, Wicked One?ā āKiį¹ pana, pÄpima, te balÄ«baddehÄ«āti?
āMine alone, ascetic, is the eye, mine are sights, mine is the field of eye contact consciousness. āMameva, samaį¹a, cakkhu, mama rÅ«pÄ, mama cakkhusamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹. Where can you escape me, ascetic? Kuhiį¹ me, samaį¹a, gantvÄ mokkhasi? Where can you escape me, ascetic?ā Kuhiį¹ me, samaį¹a, gantvÄ mokkhasÄ«āti?
āYours alone, Wicked One, is the eye, yours are sights, yours is the field of eye contact consciousness. āTaveva, pÄpima, cakkhu, tava rÅ«pÄ, tava cakkhusamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹. Where there is no eye, no sights, no eye contact consciousnessāyou have no place there, Wicked One! Yattha ca kho, pÄpima, natthi cakkhu, natthi rÅ«pÄ, natthi cakkhusamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹, agati tava tattha, pÄpima. Yours alone is the ear ⦠Taveva, pÄpima, sotaį¹, tava saddÄ, tava sotasamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹. Where there is no mind, no ideas, no mind contact consciousnessāyou have no place there, Wicked One!ā Yattha ca kho, pÄpima, natthi mano, natthi dhammÄ, natthi manosamphassaviƱƱÄį¹Äyatanaį¹, agati tava tattha, pÄpimÄāti.
āThe things they call āmineā, āYaį¹ vadanti mama yidanti, and those who say āitās mineā: ye vadanti mamanti ca; if your mind remains there, Ettha ce te mano atthi, you wonāt escape me, ascetic!ā na me samaį¹a mokkhasÄ«āti.
āThe things they speak of arenāt mine; āYaį¹ vadanti na taį¹ mayhaį¹, Iām not someone who speaks like that. ye vadanti na te ahaį¹; So know this, Wicked One: Evaį¹ pÄpima jÄnÄhi, you wonāt even see the path I take.ā na me maggampi dakkhasÄ«āti.
Then MÄra ⦠vanished right there. Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ā¦pe⦠tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti.
