With Khema Khemasutta
Standing to one side, the godling Khema recited these verses in the Buddhaās presence: Ekamantaį¹ į¹hito kho khemo devaputto bhagavato santike imÄ gÄthÄyo abhÄsi:
āFools and simpletons behave āCaranti bÄlÄ dummedhÄ, like their own worst enemies, amitteneva attanÄ; doing wicked deeds KarontÄ pÄpakaį¹ kammaį¹, that ripen as bitter fruit. yaį¹ hoti kaį¹ukapphalaį¹.
Itās not good to do a deed Na taį¹ kammaį¹ kataį¹ sÄdhu, that plagues you later on, yaį¹ katvÄ anutappati; for which you weep and wail, Yassa assumukho rodaį¹, as its effect stays with you. vipÄkaį¹ paį¹isevati.
It is good to do a deed TaƱca kammaį¹ kataį¹ sÄdhu, that doesnāt plague you later on, yaį¹ katvÄ nÄnutappati; that gladdens and cheers, Yassa patÄ«to sumano, as its effect stays with you.ā vipÄkaį¹ paį¹isevati.
āAs a precaution, you should do Paį¹ikacceva taį¹ kayirÄ, what you know is for your own welfare. yaį¹ jaĆ±Ć±Ä hitamattano; A thinker, a wise one would not proceed Na sÄkaį¹ikacintÄya, thinking like the cart driver. mantÄ dhÄ«ro parakkame.
Suppose a cart driver leaves the highway, YathÄ sÄkaį¹iko maį¹į¹haį¹, so even and well compacted. samaį¹ hitvÄ mahÄpathaį¹; They enter upon a rough road, Visamaį¹ maggamÄruyha, and fret as soon as their axle is broken. akkhacchinnova jhÄyati.
So too, a dullard leaves the good Evaį¹ dhammÄ apakkamma, to follow whatās against the good. adhammamanuvattiya; Fallen in the jaws of death, Mando maccumukhaį¹ patto, they fret like one whose axle is broken.ā akkhacchinnova jhÄyatÄ«āti.
