17. Anger Kodhavagga

RohinīkhattiyakaƱƱāvatthu

Give up anger, get rid of conceit, Kodhaṁ jahe vippajaheyya mānaṁ, and escape every fetter. Saṁyojanaṁ sabbamatikkameyya; Sufferings don’t befall one who has nothing, Taṁ nāmarÅ«pasmimasajjamānaṁ, not clinging to name and form. AkiƱcanaṁ nānupatanti dukkhā.

AƱƱatarabhikkhuvatthu

When anger surges like a lurching chariot, Yo ve uppatitaṁ kodhaṁ, keep it in check. rathaṁ bhantaṁva vāraye; That’s what I call a charioteer; Tamahaṁ sārathiṁ brÅ«mi, others just hold the reins. rasmiggāho itaro jano.

Uttarāupāsikavatthu

Defeat anger with kindness, Akkodhena jine kodhaṁ, villainy with virtue, asādhuṁ sādhunā jine; stinginess with giving, Jine kadariyaṁ dānena, and lies with truth. saccenālikavādinaṁ.

MahāmoggallānapaƱhavatthu

Speak the truth, do not be angry, Saccaṁ bhaṇe na kujjheyya, and give when asked, if only a little. dajjā appampi yācito; By these three means, Etehi tÄ«hi į¹­hānehi, you may enter the presence of the gods. gacche devāna santike.

Buddhapitubrāhmaṇavatthu

Those harmless sages, Ahiṁsakā ye munayo, always restrained in body, niccaṁ kāyena saṁvutā; go to the state that does not pass, Te yanti accutaṁ ṭhānaṁ, where there is no sorrow. yattha gantvā na socare.

PuṇṇadāsÄ«vatthu

Always wakeful, Sadā jāgaramānānaṁ, practicing night and day, ahorattānusikkhinaṁ; focused only on extinguishment, Nibbānaṁ adhimuttānaṁ, their defilements come to an end. atthaṁ gacchanti āsavā.

Atulaupāsakavatthu

It’s always been this way, Atula, Porāṇametaṁ atula, it’s not just today. netaṁ ajjatanāmiva; They blame you when you’re silent, Nindanti tuṇhimāsÄ«naṁ, they blame you when you speak a lot, nindanti bahubhāṇinaṁ; and even when you speak just right: Mitabhāṇimpi nindanti, no-one in the world escapes blame. natthi loke anindito.

There never was, nor will be, Na cāhu na ca bhavissati, nor is there today, na cetarahi vijjati; someone who is wholly praised Ekantaṁ nindito poso, or wholly blamed. ekantaṁ vā pasaṁsito.

If, after watching them day in day out, Yañce viññū pasaṁsanti, discerning people praise anuvicca suve suve; that sage of impeccable conduct, Acchiddavuttiṁ medhāviṁ, endowed with ethics and wisdom; paññāsīlasamāhitaṁ.

like a pendant of Black Plum River gold, Nikkhaṁ jambonadasseva, who is worthy to criticize them? ko taṁ ninditumarahati; Even the gods praise them, Devāpi naṁ pasaṁsanti, and by the Divinity, too, they’re praised. brahmunāpi pasaṁsito.

Chabbaggiyavatthu

Guard against ill-tempered deeds, Kāyappakopaṁ rakkheyya, be restrained in body. kāyena saṁvuto siyā; Giving up bad bodily conduct, Kāyaduccaritaṁ hitvā, conduct yourself well in body. kāyena sucaritaṁ care.

Guard against ill-tempered words, Vacīpakopaṁ rakkheyya, be restrained in speech. vācāya saṁvuto siyā; Giving up bad verbal conduct, Vacīduccaritaṁ hitvā, conduct yourself well in speech. vācāya sucaritaṁ care.

Guard against ill-tempered thoughts, Manopakopaṁ rakkheyya, be restrained in mind. manasā saṁvuto siyā; Giving up bad mental conduct, Manoduccaritaṁ hitvā, conduct yourself well in mind. manasā sucaritaṁ care.

An attentive one is restrained in body Kāyena saṁvutā dhīrā, restrained also in speech, atho vācāya saṁvutā; in thought, too, they are restrained: Manasā saṁvutā dhīrā, they are restrained in every way. te ve suparisaṁvutā.
