Pañcasatabhikkhuvatthu

Of paths, the eightfold is the best; Maggānaṭṭhaṅgiko seṭṭho, of truths, the four statements; saccānaṁ caturo padā; dispassion is the best of things, Virāgo seṭṭho dhammānaṁ, and the Clear-eyed One is the best of humans. dvipadānañca cakkhumā.

Aniccalakkhaṇavatthu

All conditions are impermanent—“Sabbe saṅkhārā aniccā”ti, when this is seen with wisdom, yadā paññāya passati; one grows disillusioned with suffering: Atha nibbindati dukkhe, this is the path to purity. esa maggo visuddhiyā.

Dukkhalakkhaṇavatthu

All conditions are suffering—“Sabbe saṅkhārā dukkhā”ti, when this is seen with wisdom, yadā paññāya passati; one grows disillusioned with suffering: Atha nibbindati dukkhe, this is the path to purity. esa maggo visuddhiyā.

Anattalakkhaṇavatthu

All things are not-self—“Sabbe dhammā anattā”ti, when this is seen with wisdom, yadā paññāya passati; one grows disillusioned with suffering: Atha nibbindati dukkhe, this is the path to purity. esa maggo visuddhiyā.

Padhānakammikatissattheravatthu

They don’t get going when it’s time to start; Uṭṭhānakālamhi anuṭṭhahāno, they’re young and strong, but given to sloth. Yuvā balī ālasiyaṁ upeto; Their mind depressed in sunken thought, Saṁsannasaṅkappamano kusīto, lazy and slothful, they can’t discern the path. Paññāya maggaṁ alaso na vindati.

Sūkarapetavatthu

Guarded in speech, restrained in mind, Vācānurakkhī manasā susaṁvuto, doing no unskillful bodily deed. Kāyena ca nākusalaṁ kayirā; Purify these three ways of performing deeds, Ete tayo kammapathe visodhaye, and win the path known to seers. Ārādhaye maggamisippaveditaṁ.

Poṭṭhilattheravatthu

From meditation springs wisdom, Yogā ve jāyatī bhūri, without meditation, wisdom ends. ayogā bhūrisaṅkhayo; Knowing these two paths—Etaṁ dvedhāpathaṁ ñatvā, of progress and decline—bhavāya vibhavāya ca; you should conduct yourself Tathāttānaṁ niveseyya, so that wisdom grows. yathā bhūri pavaḍḍhati.

Pañcamahallakabhikkhuvatthu

Suvaṇṇakārattheravatthu

Cut out affection for oneself, Ucchinda sinehamattano, like plucking an autumn lotus. Kumudaṁ sāradikaṁva pāṇinā; Foster only the path to peace, Santimaggameva brūhaya, the extinguishment the Holy One taught. Nibbānaṁ sugatena desitaṁ.

Mahādhanavāṇijavatthu

Kisāgotamīvatthu

As a mighty flood sweeps away a sleeping village, Taṁ puttapasusammattaṁ, death steals away a man byāsattamanasaṁ naraṁ; who dotes on children and cattle, Suttaṁ gāmaṁ mahoghova, his mind caught up in them. maccu ādāya gacchati.

Paṭācārāvatthu

Children provide you no shelter, Na santi puttā tāṇāya, nor does father, nor relatives. na pitā nāpi bandhavā; When you’re seized by the terminator, Antakenādhipannassa, there’s no shelter in family. natthi ñātīsu tāṇatā.

Knowing the reason for this, Etamatthavasaṁ ñatvā, astute, and ethically restrained, paṇḍito sīlasaṁvuto; one would quickly clear the path Nibbānagamanaṁ maggaṁ, that leads to extinguishment. khippameva visodhaye.
