So I have heard. Evaṁ me sutaṁ—At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground. ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe. Now at that time Venerable Mahākassapa was staying in the Pipphali cave, and he was sick, suffering, gravely ill. Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā mahākassapo pippaliguhāyaṁ viharati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Then after some time he recovered from that illness. Atha kho āyasmā mahākassapo aparena samayena tamhā ābādhā vuṭṭhāsi. It occurred to him, Atha kho āyasmato mahākassapassa tamhā ābādhā vuṭṭhitassa etadahosi: “Why not enter Rājagaha for almsfood?” “yannūnāhaṁ rājagahaṁ piṇḍāya paviseyyan”ti.

Now at that time five hundred deities were ready and eager for the chance to offer alms to Mahākassapa. Tena kho pana samayena pañcamattāni devatāsatāni ussukkaṁ āpannāni honti āyasmato mahākassapassa piṇḍapātapaṭilābhāya. But Mahākasspa turned down those deities. In the morning, he robed up, took his bowl and robe, and entered Rājagaha for alms. Atha kho āyasmā mahākassapo tāni pañcamattāni devatāsatāni paṭikkhipitvā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya rājagahaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi—He went to the streets of the poor, the destitute, and the embroiderers. yena daliddavisikhā kapaṇavisikhā pesakāravisikhā. The Buddha saw him wandering for alms in the streets of the poor, the destitute, and the embroiderers. Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ mahākassapaṁ rājagahe piṇḍāya carantaṁ yena daliddavisikhā kapaṇavisikhā pesakāravisikhā.

Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment: Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

“The stranger, providing for no other, “Anaññaposimaññātaṁ, tamed, consolidated in the core, dantaṁ sāre patiṭṭhitaṁ; with defilements ended and flaws purged: Khīṇāsavaṁ vantadosaṁ, that’s who I declare a brahmin.” tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇan”ti.
