The Great Hair-raising Conduct Mahālomahaṁsacariya

“I made my bed in a charnel ground, “Susāne seyyaṁ kappemi, resting on a skeleton. Chavaṭṭhikaṁ upanidhāyahaṁ; Village louts came up Gāmaṇḍalā upāgantvā, and mocked me in all sorts of ways. Rūpaṁ dassentinappakaṁ.

Others brought me Apare gandhamālañca, incense and flowers, bhojanaṁ vividhaṁ bahuṁ; and many kinds of cooked food, Upāyanānūpanenti, all thrilled, their minds elated. haṭṭhā saṁviggamānasā.

Those who brought me pain, Ye me dukkhaṁ upaharanti, and those who gave me happiness, ye ca denti sukhaṁ mama; were all the same to me. Sabbesaṁ samako homi, I felt no favor or anger. dayā kopo na vijjati.

I became balanced towards pleasure and pain, Sukhadukkhe tulābhūto, fame and disgrace. Yasesu ayasesu ca; I was equal in every case: Sabbattha samako homi, this is my perfection of equanimity.” Esā me upekkhāpāramī”ti.

Mahālomahaṁsacariyaṁ pannarasamaṁ.

Yudhañjayavaggo tatiyo.

Tassuddānaṁ

Yudhañjayo somanasso, ayogharabhisena ca; Soṇanando mūgapakkho, kapirājā saccasavhayo.

Vaṭṭako maccharājā ca, kaṇhadīpāyano isi; Sutasomo puna āsiṁ, sāmo ca ekarājahu; Upekkhāpāramī āsi, iti vutthaṁ mahesinā.

Having thus experience many kinds of suffering Evaṁ bahubbidhaṁ dukkhaṁ, and many kinds of success, sampattī ca bahubbidhā; in various past lives, Bhavābhave anubhavitvā, I realized supreme awakening. patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.

I gave what could be given, Datvā dātabbakaṁ dānaṁ, and fulfilled ethics without reserve. sīlaṁ pūretvā asesato; having won the perfection of renunciation, Nekkhamme pāramiṁ gantvā, I realized supreme awakening. patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.

I inquired of the astute, Paṇḍite paripucchitvā, and put forth highest effort, vīriyaṁ katvāna muttamaṁ; having won the perfection of acceptance, Khantiyā pāramiṁ gantvā, I realized supreme awakening. patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.

Having made a firm resolve, Katvā daḷhamadhiṭṭhānaṁ, and guarded truthful speech, saccavācānurakkhiya; having won the perfection of love, Mettāya pāramiṁ gantvā, I realized supreme awakening. patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.

In gain and loss, fame and disgrace, Lābhālābhe yasāyase, respect and contempt, sammānanāvamānane; having become equal in every case, Sabbattha samako hutvā, I realized supreme awakening. patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.

Seeing laziness as fearful, Kosajjaṁ bhayato disvā, and energy as a sanctuary, vīriyārambhañca khemato; rouse up energy: Āraddhavīriyā hotha, this is the Buddhas instruction! esā buddhānusāsanī.

Seeing dispute as fearful, Vivādaṁ bhayato disvā, and harmony as a sanctuary, avivādañca khemato; be harmonious and courteous: Samaggā sakhilā hotha, this is the Buddhas instruction! esā buddhānusāsanī.

Seeing negligence as fearful, Pamādaṁ bhayato disvā, and diligence as a sanctuary, appamādañca khemato; develop the eightfold path: Bhāvethaṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ, this is the Buddhas instruction! esā buddhānusāsanī.

That is how the Buddha, illustrating his own conduct in past lives, spoke the exposition of the teaching name the “Legends of the Buddha”. Itthaṁ sudaṁ bhagavā attano pubbacariyaṁ sambhāvayamāno buddhāpadāniyaṁ nāma dhammapariyāyaṁ abhāsitthāti.
